She plunged her hands into the red river, it was cold, her fingers looking for her heart. had it been here all along? She emerged with a rock covered in blood, shaped like a heart, heavy like a heart, red like a heart. the river swept around her calves, hungry for something more, angry that she was taking what it had already had. Her tattered dress slipped off her shoulders as she raised the rock, her heart, above her head, as if to surrender to some never-present god. The blood dripped off the rock, her heart, onto her arms, she closed her eyes, the droplets turned warm on her skin. She felt the river swell, and quickly stepped over the invisible rocks below the surface, she was crushing people’s hearts.
She reached the shore and stepped out of the blood onto the fresh soil earth. A droplet of something fell from the sky onto her cheek. She looked up, and sighed, purple clouds rolled overhead, and a thick rain started to fall. It was water. It was pure. It was life. She let it run over her body, washing the blood from her hands, her feet, the rock, her heart. her dress clung to her body, turning pale as the rain washed away its color. She stood, knelt and put the rock, her heart, on the damp earth. Droplets of pure water fell from her hair, from her fingertips, from her nose. She cried, sobbed into the rain, her body heaving, shaking, her salt tears mixing into the earth. They fell from her face, and landed on her heart, the rock. Her heart. she opened her eyes and saw it lying there, her heart. it was a heart- beating, red, raw and swollen. She stood and tore off her dress, and looked where the jagged scar cut across her chest.
