The World Drew To A Close

The World Drew To A Close

A Chapter by Norma M Sutton

As the world drew to a close she took all that was dear and withdrew into the depths of the earth.  Holding them close she felt no fear as into the womb they disappeared.  Feeling the shaking that would not go away.

From the distant worldly skies, trespassers searched for each one.  Seeking to find and destroy the life deep underground.  Barking calls of haunted hounds, neither beast nor man were they.  Calling, noses to the ground.  Seeking out the human prey.  Closer those demon hounds followed into the dark ransacking all they passed.

Shivering to the horrid sound she withdrew deeper to the dark of night.  Finally with wretched grief, no longer able to retreat, she kissed those she loved so well and faced the horridness of hell.  With unseeing eyes the skies she sought, arms stretched wide, she looked deep inside surrendering to what lay hidden and giving an audible consent released the creature within.

Slowly the change began.  From toes tips to the end of her tongue.  With fury she screamed a defiant roar that billowed forth.  From the depths of the earth she screamed and that scream grew.  It grew and surged from within the ground, rising up in great leaps and bounds until those searching it found.

Flames bellowing forth from deep in the ground and with the flames came a furnace's wind, traveling upward and singeing them.  From within the flames a figure came, golden eyes shining fury's flame.  Claw upon claw she struggled from beneath the earth.  Turning flickering gaze upon all that she found.

Flames erupted around her clawed feet.  Smoke from flared nostrils circled her head and skeletal wings reached for the sky.  Then those flames grew and grew, until engulfed, she was hidden from view.

Until . . .

A clear blue light illuminated the night and with wings lifted she soared from their sight.

Feathers, azure blue, swept across the night as she rose every upward, then she turned to plummet back down, once again changing as she neared the ground.  Brilliant blue to deepest red, the change started with her head.  Once again flames bellowed forth and she seared all who dared seek out those in her lair, until one and all lay black and charred where they "fell".

Still her fiery breath blew until what remained were ashes.  Then again she soared.  Red scales pattering to earth like rain.  Her true form now found, upward she soared all feathers of blue, circling higher until out of view.  Though out of sight she circled and blew.  Cooling thoughts of azure blue.

Slowly she drifted down into view, wings sweeping away ashes petty and few.  On into the night she blew and she blew as the earth she changed into something brand new.

Finally her anger spent and her work done.  She dropped to the ground with the rising new sun.  One last call she issued into sanctuary's nest, calling all dear to come to the sun.

And then as they crept out into her sight, she closed her eyes and with a deep sigh she died.  Knowing full well they faced a new challenge.  For all that they knew was no longer valid.  Anew they would start knowing full well they had a chance once again, she knew that her seeds had been sown and she could now pass to her eternal home.
