You came to me last night Tired and sad and angry Shoulders drooped and weary Eyes with tears unshed
You whispered words discouraged Hands shaking and unsure My heart felt your sorrow As across the fire you stood
I thought back to the night When first I saw your face Covered with burns so horrid Still my heart did race
So many years have come and gone And yet still you come Touch my cheek with caloused hands No I'm not alone
You came to my side Weary near to death Yet you reached out to me With little thought of self
You say you owe me . . . for what I'll never know The hope you instilled in me those many years ago Unseen you stand by my side Thoughts calm and gentle still
Your face I never hope to see Not close and personal But knowing you are there for me Is all I need to know
Who you are is no matter Nor where you strive to go You are my hidden soldier Who knows when I feel low
"And what would there be of beauty without the beast?" Oscar Wilde
Sometimes a handicap, a disfigurement or a debilitating disease will make it possible for our vain and shallow minds to comprehend the depths of our own depravity in judgement. And in those moments we can see the beauty of a soul that does need the lantern of a comely face to shine its love. We are healed by the wounds of others less fortunate than ourselves and wounded by the pride of those who consider themselves our betters. And that is the epitomy of irony.
. oh my goodness ... what an inspiration this poem is ... absolutely brilliantly written ... amazingly poignant ... intensely motivating ... so skillful and sensitive ... just beautiful ... i'm so inspired ... thank you for this ... just the words i needed ...
THere are those human angels that seem to come into our lives just when we need them... sometimes we become a human angel for someone unknowingly... A really touching tribute to one of your.
