The Frying Pan

The Frying Pan

A Poem by Norma M Sutton
"

thoughts on finding the one thing not destroyed in the fire

"

It was just a frying pan
Black and cast iron
Stamped on back
3 SK MADE IN USA

It was just a frying pan
All that remains of the kitchen
Small and round covered in soot
One small past reminder

It was just a frying pan
Bought on a whim
Only a quarter
Cast off and dim

It was just a frying pan
But now it remains
A touchable reminder
Of torched remains

It was just a frying pan
Now so much more
Surviving the burn
Waiting to be claimed

It was just a frying pan
But now much much more
Hopes and dreams remain
Beneath black ash

It was just a frying pan
It survived the hot flames
A poignant reminder
A directional hand

It was just a frying pan
Unassuming and small
Made large by its lingering
Writing on the wall

Brilliant, that's not just a frying pan. It's much much more. Surviving the flames of the past.

The richest lessons come from the most unusual of places and the greatest memories come from the simplest of moments... Very creative way to express that.

Original, brief and yet, full of special meaning.

If anyone had told me that one could use a frying pan as a theme for a poem, I'd not have believed it, but, you have and given it a kind of life. Not sure of what happened before you wrote this, your home caught fire maybe, don't know, but whatever happened it obviously dug into you very deeply.

Cool! The things we lose in the fire along with the things that do not perish. I like this because it wasn't just a frying pan. It became much more for me.
