Yellow Top Community on Joshua Mountain Fire in Rutherford County NC

A few thoughts and observations of the fire in my back yard.

This was yesterday about 2pm.  The fire was called in around 11am, but most of the area didn't know what was going on until around 1pm.  It came close to us, but we are fine.  I spent the night in the hayfield with the sheep and goats, Jeff went to Uncle Zack's, Lewis spent the night in the pasture with his horses and Mom went with Red Cross to set up the rest station for the fire and police crew.  She came in about 7:30 this morning. 

I sat in the spot this photo was taken from for most of the night.  Around 7 pm yesterday they took a dozer across from the far side of our side of the mountain to the new drive across from Max Toney's, which is where the entrance to the gated community is.  The fire break crossed the dam at the pond at Lewis' followed the fence line below the orchard, veered up to go behind the old chicken/worm house, back down to go behind the old house then down the bank across my footbridge and up the ridge on the other side.  They started back fires around 4:30 am when the winds died down.  Until then the winds were blowing from 45 to 62 mph.  No planes or helicopters could get off the ground.  I watched the burn line from the hill.  At one point the house had a line of fire behind it and across the old logging road my cabin is on up above and along the property line.  By then it was mostly under control.  They are saying that it is 90% under control.  Last I heard there were 2  houses that burned to the ground and 2 fire trucks that were lost.  We are intact if a tad smokey.
