Flicker Film

Flicker Film

A Poem by Susan Michelle
"

I wrote this as I was staring out of a classroom window. My history teacher was incredibly dull, but I used it to my advantage.

"

The light distracts,

              dancing

Jumps the bars that guard

the silver window panes

Each color dances in

different dimensions

on my palms as I stretch

my hands to catch the

beams of light

I am absent-minded,

though never free of thought

Or plans

Or ideas
But absent

Time passes as it stands still,

like a flicker film

Playing in still-frame,

a dull light projects and

catches each memory

Keep them in a box

with no bottom

so I can only watch once

Wow, it was very artistic, while still being coherent, while portraying the idea very playfully, without diminishing its artistic value. You juggled a lot of stuff at the same time on this one. I'm impressed. You did a very good job capturing the glimmer of a complex thought, and executed it timelessly.

I like... reminds me of being in a trance.

Excellent imagery. It shatters the idea that when we're caught in a zombie-like stare we're mindless and thinking of nothing. While you may have written it in a classroom setting, it reminds me of those mornings when I wake up, the house is quiet, and I stretch my arms up toward the incoming sunlight. For me, that ray of light has always been reminiscent of a movie projection in a dark theater. Thanks for that imagery.
