Luis Suárez and Edinson Cavani’s two goals proved the deciding factor between Uruguay and Costa Rica in Group D’s Match Day Two.

 

Neither side made changes to their starting eleven as Uruguay sought their second win, while Costa Rica needed to gain their first three points.

 

Adrian Martínez had the first attempt for Costa Rica saved as he was found alone running from the right wing.

 

Rodrigo Bentancur then combined with Suárez to nearly score, only for Leonel Moreira to halt the ball with his save.

 

Down the Costa Rican end, Arel Lassiter shot with the outside of his left foot, only for the ball to fly across the face of goal. He seemed the most dangerous for the Central American side.

 

Cavani and Suárez both needed Moreira saves, before offside saved Costa on the third advance.

 

Instead, Suárez won a penalty right before the break, and Cavani made no mistake from the spot.

 

Early in the second half, Suárez missed two royal chances to double the lead. Instead, Lassiter sought the equaliser, requiring a save from Fernando Muslera.

 

Celso Borges earned a yellow card as he tackled Suárez coming out of defence, and from there, Uruguay kept complete control. Finally, when all seemed to be a single-goal match, Suárez stepped up and scored a stunning goal from outside the box.

 

Bentancur nearly made it three, only to miss with his head to the right of goal. Still, two goals were enough.

 

Jose Giménez is set to miss Uruguay’s third game due to a late injury, while Costa Rica will look to reset their back three.
