Edinson Cavani had the first attempt on goal as he soon became the early danger player, only for it to be capably blocked.
However, Honduras looked dangerous as well. Eventually, it was Bonieck Garcia that shot over the bar in the 35th minute. Both sides were often too slow in their passes or shots, and so it was the defence who reigned supreme.
In the second half, Alexander López had a ping with his left foot that missed to the right of goal. Luis Suárez had a shot fly over the goal, before Garcia managed to get a shot on target, only for Fernando Muslera to have an easy save.
Finally, on the hour mark, Suárez scored with his right foot with one touch, giving Uruguay the crucial lead.
Trying to equalise, Jhon Benavidez went on a solo run, only for Muslera to make a vital save. López then followed up with his own shot, only for the Uruguayan defence to block and clear the ball.
Uruguay, instead, made it two goals as Giorgian De Arrascaeta had a shot saved, only for Jonathan Rodríguez to nail with his head into the open goal.
Uruguay held on for the win and will look to hold onto the same starting eleven for their second match. © 2024 Steve Clark |
