The Final between Germany and England at Wembley Stadium saw the visitors come out on top and take home the coveted trophy.
Little took place for the first fourteen minutes as both sides worked down the wing closest to the benches. Nothing, though, came of it, until Marco Reus switched to the other wing and passed to Timo Werner, whose shot missed the mark.
Down the English end, Harry Kane set up Marcus Rashford with a choice pass, only for the advancing Marc-André ter Stegen to make the save.
Instead, it was Toni Kroos who opened the tale in the 28th minute, taking hold of a pass with his first touch and guiding the ball into the back of the net with his second.
Raheem Sterling nearly set up Kane at the restart, where Kane’s sliding shot was only kept out by an impulsive save by ter Stegen. Jordan Henderson then took a long range shot after England played a passing game through the middle and out to the left wing and back again. England’s passing game then enacted their goal; Sterling played through to Rashford, whose shot rebounded off ter Stegen, before Sterling finished the goal with his head.
Equal footings meant the match ramped up a few notches. Germany’s passing matched that of England’s and Werner had a ping from long range, only to miss the mark. Germany’s defence then held firm for the remainder of the first half, in spite of England’s advances.
After the break, England made early tactical substitutions, while Germany kept their same set up. Leroy Sané nearly scored, only he could not get his hurried chip shot on target.
Offsides soon became the norm, along with Germany fiddling with too many passes. Substitute Emre Can tried to counter that with a long-range shot, only to miss to the right of goal.
Germany utilised play down the right wing, with right back Joshua Kimmich posing an additional attacking threat. Then, Serge Gnabry sent a cross to the head of Reus, only to miss to the right.
Instead, Player of the Match Kroos was at the centre pf a brilliant passing play, before leading the ball to Reus, who made no mistake with his shot.
Reus nearly had another goal, heading against the post, before Gnabry followed it up with a quick left foot half volley, and Germany had their third goal and one hand firmly clasped on the trophy.
Substitute Leon Goretzka had two shots to round out the match, but it mattered little as Germany defeated England 3-1 and won the Euro 2020. © 2024 Steve Clark |
