Germany scored seven glorious goals against Montenegro to be the only side winning all three group matches, whilst the Czech Republic’s single goal was not enough for them to advance to the Round of 16.
Germany and Montenegro fought for top spot, with Germany going on the attack early. That resulted in a corner straight to the head of Lukas Klostermann, whose header hit the crossbar. The ball eventually fell outside the box to Serge Gnabry, and though his shot took a deflection, it impeded the Montenegrin goalkeeper more than the trajectory, and Germany had their opening goal.
Gnabry then set up Marco Reus a minute later with the perfect ball inside the box, and Germany were up 2-0 in a jiffy.
In the eleventh minute, Reus took a shot from the same spot, and though the shot was not as strong, it was still out of the reach of the goalkeeper.
Eleven minutes later, Montenegro pegged back a goal, as Stefan Mugoša powered with his left boot, mimicking a similar spot to Reus.
Down the German end again, İlkay Gündoğan had a volley miss the mark after Leroy Sané worked down the right wing and crossed back to the top of the box.
Sané then won a penalty after he stole the ball off a Montenegrin defender and was denied a chance to run down the ball. Timo Werner made no mistake from the spot kick, firing to the left as the goalkeeper flew to the right.
Reus nearly had a first half hat trick as he took a ping diving with his head from a left-wing cross. Gündoğan also headed off a corner, only straight to the goalkeeper.
As the hour mark approached, Reus set up Sané with a choice header to the left of the goalkeeper.
Montenegro was fighting now for momentum going into the Round of 16, but instead, they were blocking shots to halt a sixth goal against them. The best Gnabry’s shot needed a goalkeeping save.
Instead, it was Klostermann, who had remained up after a corner, scoring Germany’s half-dozen, easing the ball into the back of the net.
Mugoša had a ping from a similar spot to his first goal, only for Marc-André ter Stegen to make the necessary save. Ter Stegen also saved a chip shot by the striker as the match deepened to the end.
Instead, Kai Havertz came off the bench and made it seven goals, waiting on the flank until the ball was passed to him and he made no mistake.
Mugoša finally got his second, perfecting the chip this time, only it was too late to have any modicum of saving face. They must bounce back as they face off against England, who will look to send Montenegro packing.
Czech Republic 1 Hungary 0 Hungary had to win to make it to the Round of 16, and the Czechs had to win by a grand margin to have any hope. It started well for the visiting side as left back Michal Kadlec ran up from his position as David Pavelka fed him the ball, and he made the most of the freedom around defenders as he pocketed the opening goal.
Lukáš Masopust nearly doubled the lead as he received the ball just inside the box after the ball came from the right flank. Hungarian goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi managed to make the save. Filip Novák then had a shot from outside the box after the corner was initially cleared, only to miss to the right of goal.
Masopust then set up Michael Krmenčik for a header, but the shot was saved.
Hungary finally got into the match right before the break, with a free kick header by Ádám Szalai being the first attempt on goal.
Just after the hour mark, Szalai should have equalised as he ran onto a through ball, and quickly took his shot with his left foot, only to miss to the right of goal.
The Czechs countered and Antonin Barák looked the most dangerous to score as his shot needed a Gulácsi save.
Jan Bořil nearly had a fluke goal after shooting with his heel as his back was facing the goal from a corner, only for the ball to traverse across the face of goal.
Barák then had a header late in the match off a free kick, only to miss to the left of goal. That was all, and the match ended 1-0, and the Czechs missed out on progressing by a solitary goal.
Therefore, Serbia, Romania, Sweden and Switzerland advance to the Round of 16, with the Czechs and Bosnia-Herzegovina joining Hungary, Poland, Greece, Croatia, the Netherlands and the Ukrainians in flying home early.
Serbia takes on Wales, Romania face against Germany who have won every game. Sweden face against Turkey, and Switzerland must overcome Ireland if they wish to reach the Quarter Finals. © 2024 Steve Clark |
