The Dutch flew to Turkey with an altered formation to gain their first point of Euro 2020.
Turkey looked to play keepings off and work to the corners against the Netherlands early. It took until the sixteenth minute for the first shot to be registered. Turkey swapped between the left and right wings with the ball, before passing along the ground to Caner Erkin, whose shot from the edge of the box missed the mark.
Receiving a yellow card in the next passage of play, Erkin then set up Burak Yılmaz, whose right footer aimed a little awry, but gave the Dutch a genuine scare.
The away side responded in kind with a Memphis Depay header from a right-winged cross. Fehmi Mert Günok had to dive to his right to make the crucial save.
Turkey kept working the wings in the hope of a successful cross, but to no avail. Instead, the Dutch worked down the middle of the pitch, giving a looping pass to a running Daley Blind, whose shot needed the foot of Günok to remain away from goal.
Earning a corner after hard work down the left wing, Erkin rose above the rest and secured the opening goal for the home side.
After the break, the Dutch wanted to come out swinging. Georginio Wijnaldum had a ping from long range that missed the mark. However, it took until the 81st minute for the Dutch to look menacing in any way, shape, or form. Depay cut back into from the left wing and had a shot, only for Günok to make the save.
The Dutch then attacked in additional time, making sure they did not lose possession of the ball. That resolve paid off as substitute Myron Boadu curled the ball with his left foot for the late equaliser.
Kevin Strootman tried for the winner, though his shot was from too far out and too easy for the Turkish goalkeeper.
In the end, a goal apiece at the end of each half meant Turkey and the Netherlands shared the points. © 2024 Steve Clark |
