Cenk Tosun, along with the Turkish crowd, helped Turkey gain three opening points against Romania.
Turkey had a chance to truly cement a spot in Group C with a win over Romania. The hosts attacked early and, with pressure on the defence, Mahmut Tekdemir stole the ball and fired on goal before anyone had time to react.
Turkey continued to press, often stealing the ball from the Romanians, only to muck up by passing back to them. Eventually, Turkey slowed down and played with a little more possession in mind. However, the shots still dried up until, in the 33rd minute, Cenk Tosun smacked the left post with his shot before the ball was cleared.
Down the other end, Romania created a couple of half chances; the second one saw Nicolae Stanciu’s run closed down before he could place a shot on goal. The third was an effort by George Puşcaş, who also needed multiple defenders and the goalkeeper to halt his play.
Turkey immediately countered, with Caner Erkin delivering a shot that required a save.
After the break, Stanciu found Mihai Bordeianu with his cross, only for the header to fly straight to Fehmi Mert Günok.
Instead, it was Puşcaş who scored, firing his right boot at the ball, curling it around the advancing Günok. This came from the perfect through ball, allowing Puşcaş to take on the goalkeeper with his marking man behind him.
Puşcaş tried again to take the lead, only for Günok to lean back, twist and palm the ball over the crossbar.
However, in the 60th minute, Tosun scored for the Turkish side, finishing off the perfect cutback pass from the by line by Burak Yılmaz.
In the 72nd minute, both Puşcaş and substitute Ciprian Deac both had chances saved by Günok. Stanciu then was found in the box behind the defensive line, only he got overexcited and powered the ball well over the crossbar.
Player of the Match Puşcaş had another effort, his fifth shot on target, stopped by the Turkish goalkeeper as Bordeianu crossed to him after a great one-on-one battle down the right wing. Stanciu had a shot from a tight angle, but with little power. From there, Turkey held on for the vital three points. © 2024 Steve Clark |
