The Philippines have won the second penalty shootout of the tournament over 2018 World Cup side Uzbekistan after no goals were scored in 120 minutes.
Uzbekistan and the Philippines both made minor adjustments to their line-ups.
The Philippines had the first chance, working down the left wing before the ball was cut back to Àngel Guirado, and his shot needed the left boot of Uzbek goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov.
Much of the first half was played in the middle third, with neither defence giving away chances for through balls. Iain Ramsay displayed the frustration of the first half by shooting from such a long range, that, even if his shot were on target, Yusupov would have had no trouble whatsoever.
Ramsay had the best chance of the second half as Guirado found him alone in the forward third. Expecting Yusupov to advance, Ramsay went to chip, only for Yusupov to backtrack and parry it away.
Stephan Schröck then worked down the right wing and passed perfectly to Guirado, only for the striker to miss the volley right in front of goal.
Uzbekistan’s only advancement for the half ended in offside, as the two teams maintained scoreless.
In extra time, Uzbekistan finally had their first shot, none other than from defensive midfielder Anzur Ismailov, requiring a deft save.
In the penalty shootout: Sanjar Kodirkulov scored for Uzbekistan. Ramsay scored for the Philippines. Etheridge saved Odil Ahmedov’s shot. Justin Baas scored. Sardor Sabirkhodjaev scored. Guirado scored. Jaloliddin Masharipov’s shot saved as he shot to the right. Amani Aguinaldo missed completely to the right. Eldor Shomurodov shot straight and it hit the diving Etheridge’s leg.
The Philippines advanced to the Quarters and the general consensus was they deserved to as the better team on the day. Uzbekistan will rue their missed opportunity to reach the last eight and will need to revisit their team in March with World Cup Qualifiers, hoping to reach Qatar 2022 as they had done in Russia.
Important aspects of the match: Uzbekistan only had one shot for the entire 120 minutes. Philippines had five shots, but only two on target. Low passing accuracy for both sides. Uzbekistan’s best: Rustamjon Ashurmatov with four intercepts and a clearance; Egor Krimets at right back; Otabek Shukurov with equal most dribbles for Uzbekistan; Jaloliddin Masharipov; Yusupov with two saves. Sardor Sabirkhodjaev with most passes and equal most dribbles for Uzbekistan. Temurkhuja Abdukhaliqov with most tackles for Uzbekistan.
Philippines’ best: Schröck with most tackles and equal most dribbles overall as well as three key intercepts and two clearances; Etheridge with his penalty saves; Álvaro Silva in central defence with five intercepts and five clearances; John-Patrick Strauß with equal most dribbles and most passes overall. © 2020 Steve Clark |
