Match Day 2 of the Nations League concluded this week. After drawing at home to Syria, Nepal went one better and came from behind to defeat another Middle Eastern side, Jordan. Meanwhile, Syria looked set to dominate Oman, but Oman clawed their way back from 2-nil down to come away with a tie. Sri Lanka eased to their first win by defeating Macau 2-nil. A dramatic game rounded out Asia League B with a penalty and a double yellow card for Mamun, before UAE’s two early goals ensured victory over Bangladesh.

A hat trick in four minutes from Rijssel became the backbone of Suriname’s 5-nil win over Anguilla. Three goals in the first half from both Dominica and the US Virgin Islands was the order of the day, with Lockhart’s double being the difference between the nations. The same scoreline came the way of the Bahamas, as they fought from behind against constant counterattacks to work their way back into the game against Bermuda. Bermuda had a chance to draw level late, but a Simmons missed penalty meant the Bahamas received the full three points. The Dominican Republic managed a second win for the tournament against St Lucia, whilst Montserrat scored three in the first half to create a straightforward finish against the British Virgin Islands.

In the Invitational Cup, the Netherlands, with a Memphis Depay double, easily saw off the Czech Republic in Prague and lifted themselves off the bottom of their group. Costa Rica’s defence held off a late series of North Korean attacks as the home team searched for an equaliser, but to no avail. Chile, via their new strikers Paredes and Fernándes, scored twice in the first half to set up a solid victory over Poland. With an understrength Spain scoring early via Dani Ceballos, South Korea had plenty of time to rework their game plan and score twice in the second half to surprise the Spaniards, taking the full three points.

Togo started the African showdown against Kenya in style, peppering seven shots during the first half, which culminated in an Adebayor goal. Buoyed by their away win against Belgium, Togo scored again in the second half and will head to Nairobi next month full of confidence. Peru looked out of sorts in the first half after travelling straight from Mexico to Belgium, and when the score was 4-1, the result was nearly set in stone. However, a goal from substitute Aquino and a second from Ruidíaz gave the Belgians a fright, who may have found goalscorers without the need of Lukaku, but will need to restructure their defence in the coming three Invitational Cup games if they want to remain in top spot.

One goal from Jordan Ayew was all Ghana needed to overcome Russia in Accra. The two Silvas, Rafa and André (the former in his first Invitational Cup game), scored for Portugal over New Zealand. Both France and Italy led during their match, only for Griezmann to level at 2-all, and the game to finish with that result. The biggest surprise of the Match Day was Switzerland’s continuing dominance over Group B, with a 3-nil away slogging of Brazil. It all started with a quick brace from Shaqiri, and from that moment on, Brazil struggled to penetrate the Swiss defence to wrestle back any true momentum.

In the Women’s Nations Cup Qualifiers, it was more of Match Day 4 fixtures. Cameroon thumped Kenya by eight goals, including a Menene hat trick. Ghana breezed past Tanzania 2-nil, but it was Tanzanian goalkeeper Jawady who stole the show with nine saves. Algeria saw off Botswana with three first-half goals, whilst a hat trick from Bassira Touré helped Mali win 4-nil against Zimbabwe. South Africa caught their second victory with a 2-nil result over Burkina Faso, whereas Zambia looked below par as Anonman’s hat trick led Equatorial Guinea to a 4-1 win. Morocco collected their second draw, this time against Uganda in Kampala. The same result came the way of Malawi, playing against the Congo. Ethiopia looked like they had placed all their energy into the previous game, as they scored only twice against eSwatini and Namibia breezed past Madagascar with a 3-0 victory.

In South America, Peru kept Brazil scoreless as Canales was assisted twice to score inside the first ten minutes. Two-nil was also the scoreline between Bolivia and Venezuela, with the home side scoring their first victory at the expense of the winless Venezuelans. Ecuador and Uruguay traded goals as they fashioned an attacking draw into existence.

In Europe, four goals inside thirty-two minutes were all Albania needed over Iceland, who played evidently with two injured players on the field for much of the game. In Belfast, Northern Ireland surprised the Ukraine with a 3-nil win. Bulgaria and Luxembourg was far closer, where Bulgaria needed an injury-time goal to overcome their opponents. Cyprus came from 2-nil down to score their first qualification point against Slovenia.

Kosovo hosted France for the first time, and the Kosovars quickly found holes in the French defence, so much so that Syla had a hat trick by halftime. France, without Le Sommer and Mbock, seem rather weak, and will have to beat Poland by a hefty margin to catch up in their group. While it seems pointless for the French, as they automatically qualify as hosts, a winning momentum from these games is necessary to have success next year. In the same group, Moldova capitalised on a Evrard parry straight to Mițul, who slotted home the only goal against Belgium. Romania scored at either end of the first half to defeat Montenegro.

Bosnia’s first sixty minutes consisted of: 6 corners, 5 offsides, one thwack against the post, and one handball right as scoring seemed inevitable. Finally, the attacking pressure paid off, and Bosnia defeated Latvia 2-nil. Estonia scored late in their away game against Israel to respectfully lose 2-1. Lithuania took on local rivals Belarus and their steely defence helped achieve a point away from home. Norway sat back and allowed Croatia all the first half possession (71% for the entire game), but Croatia’s lack of attacking fortitude saw the game peter out to a scoreless draw. Wales remain winless after Georgia took the opposite approach to Croatia and attacked relentlessly, scoring twice against the Welsh. England sent a second-string side to Greece and won 2-1, and Malta rounded out Europe’s Group F with a 2-nil win over Slovakia.

Meanwhile, in the Middle East, Syria stunned Thailand with a 4-nil win, including a Mary Saleh brace and an own goal from Thai defender Chinwong. Over in Hanoi, Vietnam’s constant attacks towards Iraq’s goal finally resulted in a late first-half netter, and that scoreline remained the same despite many attempts from both sides.

This week, the Physico Championships reverted to a more traditional footballing format, as the powers behind Global Futbol decided to cancel playing a first-to-five format from the Third Qualifying Round onwards. The low crowd numbers was the main reason for returning the format, since many traditional viewers simply saw it as a pointless gimmick. Also, restrictions on only nationally based players representing their country were revoked as nations such as eSwatini and Gabon petitioned for the change to see how their best performed against the best in the world.

Finland almost ignored the memo that five goals are not required anymore to win, as they slotted four past Liechtenstein. Costa Rica started slow against eSwatini, but still managed two goals against the Africans. Liberia hit the woodwork early, while Pakistan’s Hassan Bashir won a penalty against goalkeeper Wynney, who possibly should have been sent off. Bashir then hit the post with the penalty kick, and rued the missed opportunity as Liberia ran out winners with a crucial away goal. Australia managed to get a goal back through Luongo, but could not find the finishing touch to win against Georgia, led by goalkeeper Loria’s eight saves. A double from Islamkhan helped Kazakhstan overcome Iran. Wales could not find a goal in any way, shape or form, whilst Greece managed one through Mitroglou.

The remainder of the Physico Championships Third Round Qualifiers continue next week, while the second leg will take place next month, starting December 7.
