Global Futbol Matches: October 8 to 14A Chapter by Steve ClarkThe following articles provide a summary of matches and tournaments after the 2018 Global Futbol World Cup.October 8 to October 14Invitational Cup matches took place this week across the globe. Peru had multiple chances to win at the death after Adebayor drew level for Togo in the second half. In the return leg, the Peruvians maintained the momentum and the game was over soon after half time, with 3-0 the final result. The Netherlands could not combine in the final third to create enough opportunities to score against North Korea, however, in the away leg, the Netherlands compiled three second-half goals to ensure a solid victory. Belgium scored three against South Korea in Seoul, including a double from Hazard. In the second match, Belgium scored twice by half time and switched off in the second half, allowing South Korea to score a late goal.
Kenya brought in four new starting players in place of a number from the World Cup squad. This lack of experience showed when they travelled to Spain, losing 6-0, before returning home and conceding another five. Poland needed substitute Teodorczyk to clinch a late winner over Costa Rica, while two goals either side of half time ensured a second victory on Costa Rican soil. Macedonia met fellow World Cup Quarter finalists Russia, with the away team scoring twice in the second half to take the points. Back in Russia, the game was effectively over by the break, though Macedonia found gaps in the Russian defence to score twice. In the first leg of Portugal and Ghana, the European side dominated the first half against Ghana, but the Africans managed to defend better in the second half and only lose by two goals. They fared better at home, with Waris scoring to draw level after a quick counterattack from Portugal led to an opener by André Silva.
Italy scored three first-half goals to take care of a lacklustre Egyptian side in their first game, while Egypt tightened their defence for the second, and their shots on goal required multiple Italian defensive blocks. Brazil came from two goals down against an altered French side to draw level at home in injury time. France nearly caused a mirror image to the first game, but could not find a second goal, and lost 1-2 to the Brazilians. Meanwhile, Chile slotted four goals past the Czech Republic, while in the replay, the Czech Republic came from two goals down late in the game to be all square at the end.
World Cup Qualifiers for 2022 started this week in Africa. Burundi missed a penalty that could have awarded them a home win against Somalia. Lesotho could not overcome the Eritrean defence as the game petered out to a 0-0 draw. South Sudan needed a cracking goal from Manyang to overcome the Comoros, and Sierra Leone scored late via substitute Lahoud to defeat Djibouti, despite the East Africans being awarded a penalty, only for the kick to sail wide.
Return legs are scheduled for December 15th.
