August 6thto August 12th, 2018: Global Futbol MatchesA Chapter by Steve ClarkThe following articles provide a summary of matches and tournaments after the 2018 Global Futbol World Cup.August 6thto August 12th, 2018Women’s Nations Cup Qualifiers In the completion of Match Day 1, Spain scored five from five different scorers past Russia. Slovenia thumped Kazakhstan 4-0. Slovakian goalkeeper Korenčiová made a crucial penalty save to help her country defeat Greece. Though Italy trounced Israel 6-1, it was the Italian defence that looked the shakiest early. In Budapest, Hungary needed two late goals to overcome Estonia. Netherlands and Austria both had two goals within twenty minutes, only for the Dutch to take full control with hat tricks from Martens and Worm. Faroe Islands will struggle to emulate their male counterparts as they lost 3-nil to Romania.
In their second matches, Singapore played host to Hong Kong and scored a solitary goal by substitute Yu Ying to post their win. Malaysia scored twice from goalkeeping rebounds to tie at home against South Korea, as did India away to Bhutan, who proved their win against Japan was a fluke. Maldives thumped Myanmar 4-0 from four different goal scorers. Tajikistan’s defence held on as they handed Japan their second loss in a row, while a 68th-minute goal ensured a second win for Uzbekistan. Iraq’s possession game allowed them to take the lead over Australia with substitute Omar’s goal, only for Australia to salvage a draw through a late Alleway equaliser. The Philippines and Vietnam, as well as Syria and China, had chances in their matches, but could not break the deadlock. Those two draws allowed Bangladesh to take the lead in Asia’s Group E with three late goals against the UAE. Iran’s two goals against Thailand came from their left and right backs. Nepal scored a late goal to settle for a draw against Palestine.
Westwards in Europe, a fourth and fifth goal for Matić in the qualifications so far helped Serbia win against Denmark. Scotland needed two great late saves from goalkeeper Alexander to post their first win of the campaign. Poland held Belgium to a goalless draw. Moldova’s Colesnicenco scored in the first half with a great run to overcome Kosovo, who showed signs of capability in their opening match. Andorra managed a draw against Iceland. Germany scored twice to level in Portugal, only for the Portuguese to pile on four more goals in a wondrous display.
African matches saw some pivotal results. Uganda’s defence ensured Equatorial Guinea strikers remained offside as they fought for a late equaliser. Morocco opened their campaign with an away win over Mozambique, thanks to goalkeeper Er-Rmichi’s save stopping Domingues scoring a second goal from a free kick. Nigeria’s first half saw two goals scored against Zimbabwe. Madagascar held their own as they went down 2-nil to Mali away, as did Algeria against Burkina Faso at home. Lesotho scrounged a 1-0 win over Botswana to remain top spot of Africa’s Group B.
Venezuela could not stop the Brazilian juggernaut as a Marta double ensured an away victory for the yellow and blue side. Argentina bounced back after last weekend’s loss to Brazil with Jaimes scoring her second on the stroke of injury time to overcome Bolivia. Colombia needed to hold off a resilient Paraguay and managed a 2-1 win. Chile used five different scorers to net a solid win over Uruguay. The second stage of the Invitational Cup began on Sunday. Portugal scored late through Guedes to level with Russia in Moscow. Togo found a way to win at home against Spain thanks to a Romao goal. North Korea ensured a little payback for losing to Poland in the World Cup by winning 2-1. However, the talk of Match Day 1 was South Korea’s 12-0 away win over Peru, including four goals from Kim Shinwook.
More Physico Championships matches were played this week, with many groups being finalised. Greece, Swaziland, Liechtenstein all advanced, while tightly-contested Groups 21, 29, 30, 31 and 34 saw Myanmar, Iran, Cayman Islands, Liberia and Hong Kong progress.
