Ecuador Stun England With Four First-Half Goals

England 3-4 Ecuador

Ecuador has defeated hot favourites England after a formidable display ensured they led 4-nil at halftime.

Ecuador dominated the first half, having four clear shots and two goals in the first sixteen minutes. The first goal was a mighty strike from Caicedo after a pass from Larrea, and the striker set the tone with a near second goal. Martinez followed up with an 11-minute long-range goal, shocking the English back three into submission.

Again Ecuador attacked, giving England little time to correct their structure. Two more goals came before halftime. The third, a left footer from Noboa drove past Pickford after Erazo left Ayovi’s central pass. Then Larrea received his second assist when Caicedo also left footed the ball, curling it around the English goalkeeper.

With the score at 4-0, England switched their defensive structure around, although it may have been too late. Southgate’s team then came out in the second half with intent. Ashley Young started the fightback by hammering a long-range shot into the top right corner. Kane missed a great opportunity after Young’s goal, firing the shot over the bar. From then, the two teams battled for supremacy, with England having more chances.

Finally, as all hope seemed lost, Man of the Match Young won the ball at right midfield and strode to goal, firing and scoring his second.

England kept attacking, only for the Dominguez, the Ecuadorian goalkeeper, to hold them firmly at bay.

Kane scored a late consolation goal after a tight tussle with Erazo and a first shot thwarted by Dominguez, before slotting the ball low into the goal.

Ecuador can take a plethora of confidence out of the game, knowing their attacking style can match it and defeat sides like England. They take on Libya on Sunday. On the other hand, England now play Costa Rica in a do-or-die match.
