Chapter 6: A Day In MonarchA Chapter by Adele PotterWe return to the best city I've ever been in-- Monarch, Ohio.Thursday, July 4-- Independence Day 7:01 AM Well, we just entered the best city I’ve ever been in: Monarch. Monarch, Ohio is pure concentrated awesome. It has everything: diners, arcades, book shops, thrift stores, movie theaters. I’ve been here five times before, and loved it every time. Logan loves it here, too. He says that once he graduates from college, he’s buying one of the apartments here and is going to spend the rest of his life here. Sounds good to me. 7:15 AM “Hmm…” said Logan. “You know what? Let’s just hang here for the day.” “What?” I said. “You love Monarch, and so do I. Plus,” he added, eyes flicking towards the back seat, where Spencer and Zeke were still sleeping. “Z and Spencer have never been here. We can show them our favorite places.” I smiled. “Come to think of it, spending a day in Monarch sounds pretty good.” “We can do all those things you like,” he promised. “The fair will be here, and ride wristbands are cheap. We can go to a drive in movie after the fireworks. Plus, I would love to see the museum again.” I grinned at him. Logan can be a pain in the a*s, but I love him. He really is a great brother. “Okay, we’ll spend Independence Day here.” Now I’m just waiting for Logan to pay the parking meter. This is gonna be so much fun! 9:23 AM We spent the first part of the morning at the Science and Nature Museum. It was great! There was a presentation on bugs, and Zeke raised his hand when they guy asked for someone to help him. He was breaking one of my Personal Rules, which are an unshakeable code that I live my life by. Personal Rule #79: Don’t volunteer unless you know what you’re getting yourself into. Anyway, the presenter put a large tarantula on Zeke’s shoulder. You should’ve seen his face! It was too funny!!! 10:00 AM Waiting in line to get our tickets for the fair. Spencer and Zeke are goofing off, taking pictures of each other. Logan chuckled and said to me, “There is so much not right about those two.” “You’re just now figuring this out?” I laughed. He poked me. “Don’t be snarky. It’s not very flattering.” I rolled my eyes. We both know damn well that I won’t be able to ever stop snarking. It’s just who I am. Logan said, “So, what do you want to do first?” “The Tilt-a-Whirl,” I said immediately. “Aw, come on, Luna! You know I hate that thing!” “Only because you threw up on it three years ago,” I replied. He made puppy eyes at me, but I did them right back. He sighed. “Fine, for you, I’ll do it.” Like I said, my brother’s all right.
