Underwater

Underwater

A Poem by Annabel Lee

Awash in the waves,
I submerge myself in this perfect world.
My hair floats past,
My eyes are sightless,
My clothing billows out around me.
The fear rushes in like a linebacker,
And for a minute,
I wish to leave this sterile hell.
But after that minute,
I realize how lucky I am.
In this alternate world,
nothing can go wrong.
Turning around,
I open my eyes to the stinging water.
I see the light flickering at the top,
temptingly pulsating with the sweet juice of life.
But do I really want to leave?
Would I give my life to live in this amazing place?
Not quite sure,
anymore.
Thoughts zoom around my head like so many bees,
Words flash across my eyelids,
And I realize I am lucky.
I am seeing this beautiful place,
And my eyes,
however red,
are shining like the moon.
Suddenly my lungs send an alarm.
I must leave this place,
If I am to live.
I swallow once,
and shoot to the top.
As I reach it,
loss rushes me,
And I realize:
I have just witnessed,
and given up,
true beauty.
