RunningA Chapter by susan bThe dark forest was silent. Too silent. So silent not even the wind blowing could be heard. And then there was a bang. A loud deafening bang that erupted from an unknown source. The girl with dark brown hair and gentle brown eyes looked around, curious. She couldn’t think. Couldn’t believe it. It was all over. She didn’t know what exactly had happened but she didn’t need too. They were gone. All of them. All of it. Gone. At least a part of them were. The rest would come. The rest of the explosions followed by nothing. Like the wind just was. Silent. So silent. She looked down at her blue-green spaghetti strap dress that had been tattered from running and hitting tree branches and wondered how things could have changed so quickly. It was him she was sure it had to be. He wasn’t in the room when the threats were made...unless maybe he was… She couldn’t remember but maybe- and then she heard another bang and another. Horse hooves came near and it reminded her to breathe. And run. A gruff voice called out, “My lady! Princess!” And she ran faster. Far away. Away from the explosion. Away from the now ruined castle that had probably been blown away already, if not it would be soon that it would be gone as well. Gone. Her home. Her life. Her everything. Gone. Forever. The girl looked around her for the book she had dropped, a journal. Her journal. Newly received. It had only 3 entries in it. She found it and grabbed it, continuing to run. She stopped for breath once and then continued to run. “She’s gone men! We’ll have to tell the king we cannot find her! C’mon let’s head back!” The gruff voiced man said a few feet away from her. She heard the hoofprints recede and it was then she broke down and cried. Cried for her loss. She looked at her name on her journal, engraven in gold PRINCESS DIANE BOLAFOLDER. She opened the journal and read the journal entries, thinking back to simpler times that weren’t that long ago. There was only four entries that read: May 13th Father has given me a journal to write in. How I enjoy it. Well, I suppose I ought to tell about my life. My parents are King and Queen Bolafolder from Fareksview. I have a cat named Sunflower. She is a calico. I have a sister named Maryonette or Mary who is 12, a little brother Mike who is 5 and another brother George who is 2. I am 16 and the oldest of my family. I enjoy walks in our garden that is on the east wing in the spring time. I got this a week ago and didn’t write becaUse I didn’t know what to write. I have my own room and Mary has hers. Mike shares a room with George because he likes the company apparently. At least that’s what he says. And so he shares a room with George. May 18th George is ill. He coughs constantly and looks pale. He refuses to eat. He complains of a throat and earache. We are quite worried. The doctor shall be here soon. May 19th It seems to be worse than we expected. George is to take medicine, 3 times a day. I am terribly worried that God will take him. He cried out during the night many times. We are scared. Little Mike keeps asking me when he will get his play buddy back. I keep having to tell him I do not know. May 29th George has been feeling alot better. He is almost to his normal self. He wishes to run and play but he isn’t strong enough to run. He tried and he broke into a coughing fit. But he can walk good and play and ride his horse at times. We are to have a party tonight. I can’t wait. She looked at the last entry, the one she wrote tonight. And she wept. It was there at the tree trunk that she cried herself to sleep under the full moon. © 2017 susan bAuthor's Note
