SkatesA Story by Siren
We
all die slowly in the end.
What a morbid way to think about life. Unfortunately, it was true. Is true. Riley paused mid-twist and took in a deep breath. She lowered her foot so it sat flat on the ground again. Life really was a slow and painful death. At least, her life was. She looked up to the night sky and blew at the snowflakes that floated innocently along. If only it could be different. If only she could be different. Instead, she was trapped as her world fell apart around her.
She turned, closed her eyes, and ran the routine again, gliding across the still fresh ice and trying to forget her thoughts. The clicks and slices of her skates against the ice pushed the thoughts farther to the back of her mind. Maybe if she buried them, her thoughts wouldn’t remind her who else had been buried. There she went again. She stumbled and suffered a harsh fall. Nothing was ever as easy as it seemed. Hell, dying probably wasn’t even that easy. Had Carter ever thought of that? Who would ever know what Carter thought? It barely mattered now. He was dead. Riley untied her skates and walked over the chilled pond and towards her house, fighting tears. Little brothers weren’t supposed to die. © 2011 SirenAuthor's Note
