The History of Herstory

The History of Herstory

A Poem by Poetic Shambles

She watched art house movies

as she smoked liquorice cigarettes,

it didn’t matter what language

as long as it was French or Spanish.

She wore lots of jewellery

that others had collected for her,

each had their own story

but it wasn’t hers.

She lived her life at night

eternally nocturnal,

she befriended strange men,

fraternally maternal.

She kept secrets from her family

in order to stay adrift,

her parents would never know

about all the chemicals that she’d sniffed.

This person was intelligent

but she just had mixed emotions,

thrown at a young age

into the depths of the ocean.

The tide made her bitter

to the ways of another

so she watches foreign movies

that she doesn’t understand,

just so that she can forget about the others.

Her story is tale of melancholy and a tattered heart...confused thoughts and feelings and the lack of a sense of self..most likely caused by family turmoil...we are made by our experiences and haunted by our pasts...it gives no hope...no happy end...but you execute it beautifully

A wonderful reel of imagery love, almost film like in itself! lol You vividly describe the person well, leaving the reader with a sense of empathy, the fact you have the ocean in there too adds to the element of emotion xx

This poem was so...fascinating. I couldn't stop reading, even just for a moment. Every word was like another chapter in a story...So I'm honest when I say this sounds like it would make a brilliant book. The character of the woman was fantastic, and i especially liked the way you described her.

"She wore lots of jewellery
that others had collected for her,
each had their own story
but it wasn’t hers."

Those were my favourite lines :) This was such a beautiful poem, thanks for sharing!!
