The History of Herstory

The History of Herstory

A Poem by Poetic Shambles

She watched art house movies

as she smoked liquorice cigarettes,

it didn’t matter what language

as long as it was French or Spanish.

She wore lots of jewellery

that others had collected for her,

each had their own story

but it wasn’t hers.

She lived her life at night

eternally nocturnal,

she befriended strange men,

fraternally maternal.

She kept secrets from her family

in order to stay adrift,

her parents would never know

about all the chemicals that she’d sniffed.

This person was intelligent

but she just had mixed emotions,

thrown at a young age

into the depths of the ocean.

The tide made her bitter

to the ways of another

so she watches foreign movies

that she doesn’t understand,

just so that she can forget about the others.

Her story is tale of melancholy and a tattered heart...confused thoughts and feelings and the lack of a sense of self..most likely caused by family turmoil...we are made by our experiences and haunted by our pasts...it gives no hope...no happy end...but you execute it beautifully

Take out "or Spanish" and this poem gets a 100. Very good poetic flow besides that little part, and even with the odd syllables it brings a certain sense of young desperation that we all know too well these days. The haunting of our pasts and presents is seemingly represented in this piece.

a creature of the night...driven into the shadows where her eyes glow in the dark...finds comfort in the closeness of the night...in her anonymity...
very well written...

I love the melancholy tone and that there's something deeper behind the meaning of what's written here. I also loved the irony in the lines "it didn’t matter what language / as long as it was French or Spanish." Very well done!

These are the cool people in this world. I met many like her in my life. I would love to talk to them. Their view was kind and special. I watch some of them foreign movies with people who love the night and the dream of something different. The poem is very good. You create a special person with a very good story. Thank you.
