The Candles Look Prettier Lit

The Candles Look Prettier Lit

A Poem by December Blaize

Here's to another year, another story,
The words have run right off the page again
And though there are no balloons or glory,
I'm feeling lighter with every stroke of this pen.

I'll look at your picture and forget to cry,
It's become so routine like the ringing in my ears
But it's no use to wish, no use to live a lie,
So tonight I'll uncross my fingers and face my fears.

They said April showers bring May flowers,
Well I say no rain will fall from these hazel eyes
And I don't need roses, just a few extra hours,
Enough to light a candle for every one of our lies.

I'll have a party for one and not invite me,
I just want to get your voice out of my head
'Cause when I whisper "happy birthday to me",
I want to hear my own freaking words instead.

Author's Note

December Blaize
April 26th is my birthday. I hate blowing out the stupid candles and making a wish that won't come true.
