All These Things I've Done

I have been to the edge and peered into the abyss,
I have danced with the devil and shared one bitter kiss.
I have screamed at the sky and fallen from grace,
I have dreamed of destruction and stepped out of place.

I have cried you a river and drowned in the tears,
I have spared you a nightmare and choked on my fears.
I have burned every bridge and left you to the fire,
I have spun webs of stories and called you a liar.

I have broken my heart and glued it back together,
I have wandered without aim and lost myself forever.
I have wished on a star and given up on fate,
I have regretted mistakes and said too little too late.

I have looked in the mirror and disliked what I saw,
I have hated the world and stared at in in awe.
I have counted false promises and sang beautiful sins,
I have written an end and watched as life begins.

I have mourned for innocence and followed you to my demise,
I have blinded myself from truth and stared right into your eyes.
I have held happiness and let it slip through my fingers,
I have spit forth wasps of words and swallowed the stingers.

I have suffered for pleasure and laughed for the pain,
I have hoped for forgiveness and prayed but in vain.
I have looked for what's right and fought for what's wrong,
I have cut out my heart and I swear I have loved you all along.

Put it to music. think traditional rhythms and instruments. Off the top of my head? Old American or Celtic folk. Maybe, maybe, a Norah Jones or Sarah McLauglin piano to accompany that style of melody.
