Fated To Telling Only Lies

Fated To Telling Only Lies

A Poem by December Blaize
"

The title is a line from the song "Behind Blue Eyes" by The Who.

"
Let's flash back to a better time,
A story worthy of this rhyme:
Meet you at 7 o'clock, couldn't wait,
You were so happy to see me even though I was late,
And as we listened to the music so overdue,
All I could think of were your eyes so blue.
-
Now the broken record plays a mournful wail
And the city ruins reek of betrayal,
But who am I to judge so quick?
I can't prove anything, I'm agnostic,
I just hope your dreams are all but empty
And that you don't regret anything but me.
-
In my delusions you had a hollow conscience
But maybe it was pain that was your private penance.
You tried to do what you thought was best,
I shut you out of the dead organ in my chest,
And maybe I should have known
Lonely isn't the same as being alone.
-
All the sad songs in the world cannot convey
The pangs of guilt and remorse I feel today,
And how you suffered at my hands--
How ironic it is that I'm the only one who understands;
You did nothing to warrant being marked a liar,
For it was I who threw you into the fire.
-
Everyone's got something to hide,
I'm the prime example, said without pride,
So how did I stare into your beautiful eyes
And see only what shows in your disguise?
Please blame me for making your words untrue--
If I had looked beyond your blue eyes, I'd have seen you.
