Wondering

Wondering

A Poem by Summer Grace

I wonder about your life
What might have happened
Had you not died so soon
In long ago autumn
When the leaves were falling

I wonder about your death
What was your last day like
Your last afternoon or morning
Decades ago, longing to know
About your death in autumn

You never knew me nor
I you, but I remember you yet
A descendant born after
Long after, in the aftermath
Of your long ago death

Your death froze you
In time smiling and young
Having fun by a long ago sea
You never knew the future
For you, was never to be

But only for those who came after
Like me- my questions
About your life and death
Echo silently at best faraway
And full of fantasy

Down the corridors of time
You had your reality
I have mine but decades
Later in a world that’s faraway
I wonder if you could
Speak to me what would you say?

Looking out from your photograph
Of a past that could never last
You smile at time, you smile
At death, because you live on
Though you’re gone, in another time
