Fear of the FloodA Poem by Kaitlyn StoneThere is a rainstorm off in the distance, lighting fire in wet air and like a moth to a streetlamp, I am driven to the light down the road in front of me.
The thunder rolls but the clouds cover up the beat of the drums, silencing the thoughts that say this is only a beautiful disaster that tell me I'm distracted by the quick pulse of white veins in the night that reel me in with the wailing winds hoping I'll find solace in the storm.
And I wonder why I'm afraid to hear the lightning crack afraid to hear it breaking or to see the flashes before me as only inverted images of cracks in the glass so clear and so dark: destined for damage.
I'm afraid to embrace the rain as it falls down my face and over my chest afraid to let the water quench the fire ablaze beneath my skin afraid to accept that sometimes lightning only strikes once. © 2012 Kaitlyn StoneReviews
