MoondanceA Poem by John StussyI love my sax
I walked about around midnight, Out on the glowing streets. My saxophone openly called to me Begging for me to play. The softness of the wind Made me take up my horn, And under glowing moonbeams My notes sprang forth. I hid my case under a bush And proceeded on my way. I wandered for a little while, And found a streetlight to lean on. Soft gentle notes came from nowhere, And the night embraced the sound. A few moments later, happily laughing, Two lovers came around. I watched them stroll O’er yonder, to the park. I kept playing my nonsense And smiled at their romance. Then a moonbeam came And shot me through the head, Sent chills down my spine And planted a song in my head. The couple embraced happily, And my fingers began to dance, Not the dance of mere playing But the gentle steps of a Moondance. Van Morrison shone forth And as if my playing was a cue The lovers swayed to and fro, Letting the music take its due. The sweet passion of their gazes Matched my tenderness for song. Though two lovers were in plain sight, Four were in fact showing their love. My connection to my instrument Was such that we were one, It was akin in every aspect To the feeling of making love. Ah, such a marvelous night to make romance To the art that has given me life. I accepted sweet music’s advance And let it pull me away from my strife. © 2008 John StussyFeatured Review
