2026

A Story by StormyDixie
"

A short story writen by me! It's about what I think the world would be like in 2026 if we went completely paperless.

"

Life has changed a lot since 2024. 2024 was the year when paper went extinct. My 8th grade year was the last year we took notes on paper during class, wrote essays, and doodle on paper during class. I'm in 10th grade now, and, looking around the school, the world took a turn for the worse. Last year it wasn't that bad. We still had paper in math and sometimes English class. This year it's gone. Vanished.

I walk down the main hallway towards the office, turn left, and head upstairs to English. English is the class I want paper to live in. Mrs. Blakey loves for us to work on our laptops, as do all the teachers. Literature is completely different this year. If there's an essay we have to do, then we don't turn it in on paper. We email the teachers or "fast scan" our papers to the teachers. "Fast scan" is like email, but for educational purposes only. Literature itself is easier the year. However, now that we are typing everythin and not writing, it's becoming harder to remember things.

English goes be fast and after class Mrs. Blakey confronts me, "Zoey, can I see you for a sec.?" She doesn't say this with her voice; she says it through her fingers, through  her computer, and into mine. Instead of replying, I simply get up and walk to her desk. She looks suprised that someone's talking to her face-to-face. "Um, Zoey, I've noticed you have been drawing in class. It's becoming a distraction to you and others. I let out a sigh, "I promise I will stop."

At home I can finally be myself again. Now that we don't use paper anymore, there's no need to check the mail. My mom even pays bills online or over the phone. I used to have a pen pal, but now there's no need to have one; we use Facebook and Twitter to communicate.

The government its self has terminated paper. All of the bills and legal documents have all gone online.

Without paper, the world's becoming dumber. It's time for dinner. My mom just texted me...
