HomeA Poem by SarahI wrote this after I learned about the Civil War.The sun is hot The wind is dead The silence is too loud The breath is too ragged Why do we fight? Most are only boys Some are only men But once they pull the trigger They become something else Why do we kill? The call is given The screaming starts The silence is broken And the men and boys have gone So it begins The green grass is red The blue eyes are black And in the place of the soldiers There is something else “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death” They kill They fall They run They die “I will fear no evil.” The moon is bright The wind is cold The silence is taken away by crying By the ragged breath of a soldier “Home” He says in a dying breath Home He wishes in his heart he could go Home Why do we fight? Why do we kill? Questions that I can’t answer Who can? And the soldier Who couldn’t answer it himself whispers Home And to heaven he goes A place where the heart is filled with happiness A place called home. © 2012 SarahAuthor's Note
