Broken Promises

Broken Promises

A Poem by StormeLight

You learn more about a person
From how they treat an enemy
Rather than a friend
How do they treat someone
That they don't respect
They take the moral high ground
No scruples for what is said
How do you treat your enemies?
How do you treat your friends?
We say we care so much
Its understandable,
We are angry
But look at who you dehumanize
You're so disgusted its blinding
Many people talk to me
Convinced I must agree
With all the sordid enemies
Who don't want us to be free
But you must hear me as I say
I will fight for freedom
Until my dying day
But acting like they aren't human
Is simply not okay
It doesn't matter who is right
And who is wrong
Its not about what people deserve
It's about well rounded understanding
Hear me,
It's about understanding
To make a difference
We must not lack this
We must set our hate aside
Like Martin Luther King did
Right before he died
We cannot bring our freedom back
With all the things we lack
But to breathe new life and wisdom
Into the hearts left so off track
Feel your beating heart
Understand their pain
A point of view left desolate
In all the branded hate
To fight tyrannical power
We must work together
Despite all our differences
We must work together
To take down a common enemy
That see's a human as property
So we can have our different views
Instead of inescapable poverty
Make no mistake,
You will lose,
If you try to comply your way out of this
for we have a common enemy now
Streets littered with broken promises

Thank you for sharing this very wise and thoughtful poem. I recently penned a piece that touched on this issue called Lost in the Fire. It speaks more darkly of the effects of hate and its pernicious nature. How one can be consumed by the same hatred they revile others for. How that immoral emotion festers smolders and eventually burns destroying both the hater and hated leaving behind grey ash devoid of any difference in color or spite. For it is in those ashes our commonality is defined and the truth of our nature revealed. We are all the same and what will be left behind reflects just that. Ashes. Yet we are given an opportunity at legacy; to leave something of great wisdom and value behind. It is better to leave this world with love, than with a hate that has no value or worth but only brings destruction. Thank you for sharing your poem with us. These precious words of yours show the profound value of this community and the art it is filled with.

Gee
There is less and less understanding, empathy, love, or so it seems these days. Folk are so trapped in their own little bubble they would barely notice if their near neighbours lay dead in the street.
A powerful piece of writing

Thank you! God, I was so emotional when I wrote this. So emotional.
Despite all our differences
We must work together
To take down a common enemy
That see's a human as property
So we can have our different views
Instead of inescapable poverty

LOVE this part so much, this is so truthful and full of wisdom.
