"Mom is Dying"

"Mom is Dying"

A Poem by Mark

The call came late last night,
"Mom's not gonna make it,
We don't know if she'll last the night."
The anger, the pain welled up, "Wait ! What do you mean"?
"What are you gonna do "? I can't get their in time! I need to get a flight!"
"We can only keep her comfortable".
The shock is like a fiery bullet straight down through my brain,
lodging in my gut, twisting and melting.
On it's way down tearing out cinematic memories from throughout my life for me
to see dancing around in technicolor.
I always knew that someday this would come, but you never get prepared.
Not fully. Th anger and the sadness wash over me like a tsunami of fire, I cry till I no longer can.
They can figure out how to put a man on the moon, transplant a heart,
bioengineer plants so they are hybrid species, but they couldn't figure out how to keep the woman that gave me a home when I had none, loved me, taught me values and raised me, they couldn't keep my Mother from turning into a vegetable. F*****g Alzheimers .......

This is powerful stuff, Mark. I experienced something similar with my mother, so the words are especially meaningful. Now at age 66 and getting quite forgetful, I worry a bit about that awful disease. We can lose limbs or senses, but loss of mind is unthinkable.

This is so personal, and I like that you wrote about it.Being able to write about things that hurt us can be very hard. Losing people we care about is truly so devastating. You're a wonderful writer, and I am so sorry for your loss.

Alzheimers is a horrible disease, keeping the poor soul alive while the brain decomposes. I can only assume this was written from real life inspiration, to hurt...to experience the ghost of someone you care for so very much...ache...this is sad.

This is a most sad, most heartfelt, and honest write again my friend. I do love your pieces. How hard it is to get a call like that... the way you deal with it is so logical, all thoughts come up into your mind after, mixed feelings... You poignt that out to me as a reader with this sentence: "The shock is like a fiery bullet straight down through my brain,". Most felt... and then: " I always knew that someday this would come," it is a thing, we all most fear, we know we aren't immortal on this life-time, but after...? who would say it...? :) I so feel you into this write, going through the same situation just now with my mother in law. But no Alzheimers, but something I will tell you soon. So heartfelt this. It really touched me. Great writing Mark. Always keep on venting...

Hey, thank you for this. Brave, honest, heart-rending, and soul-ripping. You said it perfectly, entirely, at once so personally, yet so universally. You are just simply a terrific writer.
