Something my Daughter Said at the Diner

Something my Daughter Said at the Diner

A Poem by Stiver
"

I love when a child says something so innocent that can be construed as something very profound.

"

As I watched
the old man,
in the next booth over,
calculate
the distance between
his soup,
his mouth,
and his trembling,
my daughter, four,
came to an epiphany—

“Daddy, if you let your
mouth open too long,
your heart will fly out.”

“Yes…I think it will”

“yeah,” she said, “and that
could really hurt.”

I nodded.

I thank my children often for teaching me patience. Their simple wisdom shouldn't be lost on us tired adults.

Pint sized packages of wisdom when we least expect them. I have to think that they'll grow up to amazing adults.
