A Brave StepA Story by steveA man has to face his demons. A Brave Step The man sat away from everybody else. In the room women mainly chatted about their boring lives, while the men stayed silent. He looked on, pitying the other males. What weak idiots they had become. He had been in a relationship once, and what an ordeal that turned out to be. Pots and pans being thrown across the room, in the direction of his head usually. And it was all down to one thing, his girlfriend Katie at the time was off her head. This is when he came to the very brave decision to never get involved again. He did love her at the beginning, but as the relationship went on it grew increasingly worse. And the funniest thing was, he was still fond of her to this day. But their loss had destroyed everything. He was a bachelor boy these days, and it suited his lifestyle. Occasionally he would have the odd one nightstand. In the morning he would leave quietly, and this is how he preferred it. On one occasion though, something very bad occurred. Without realising and with utter surprise, the woman he had slept with the night previous, was up before him and had even made breakfast, which she bought to him while he lay in the comfort of her bed. He remembered eating the cooked breakfast with much delight, not wanting to be rude. Then saying his goodbyes before fleeing the house, and leaving the lady quite baffled by the whole thing. He looked over at the other people, the women mingled between themselves, while the men still sat in silence. The reason he was there, was a reason he could not quite face. He felt silly, and he did not enjoy the feeling at all. Maybe he should make the effort, and walk over and introduce himself. He got up from the wooden chair and made his way towards the group. Some stood, while others sat. As he approached them, a man with grey hair turned in his direction. “Oh hello. Are you here for the same reason, dear fellow?” the man asked. He sighed in disbelief, not believing he was here doing this. It was his good friend Jonathan who had put him up to it. At first he kept telling him he was not interested, but Jonathan being Jonathan, would not take no for an answer. So here he was, and he felt like a complete fool. He answered the man, “Yes, I’m here for the same reason as you.” The man looked pleased all of a sudden, and he dabbed his wrinkled forehead with a handkerchief, then he said, “Jolly good, shall we proceed.” He agreed by nodding his head. Those standing gathered chairs, when finally they sat in a big circle, facing each other. The one who must have been in charge, spoke softly, “It’s lovely to see you all here today. I know that everyone seated here this afternoon have lost a child in someway, and find it hard to cope with their loss. So, don’t be scared. Tell us your story, as we are here to help.” He sat there feeling uncomfortable, and the man in charge gave him a look, before saying, “You are new here, please tell us your story.” It was time to bare his soul, his inner demons. He thought back suddenly to that day, receiving a phone call at work. It was Katie at the other end, and she was sobbing. When he had finally put the phone down, he was crying himself. Just outside of the school gates their little angel had been hit by a car, and she was dead. Her name was Sara, and she was only six years old. The man behind the wheel supposedly drunk. He knew what had to be done, and peered at the man. He coughed a couple of times to clear his throat. With butterflies in his stomach he began to tell his story. I love you, Sara. Xx The End
