The Royal MermaidA Poem by Steve BeairstoThis poem is about a crew of English privateers who raided Spanish ships in the Caribbean.
Out of the port Bridgetown, we sailed westerly In the azure Caribbean, in the tropical sea The Royal Mermaid, with a crew of ninety four A privateer ship, feared from the sea to the shore
We raided merchant ships just off the Spanish Main Laden with silver and gold, all for King Phillip of Spain We took their coins and their jewellry, cargoes in their hold We were dashing, we were daring, in all the raids we were bold
From the Queen, we took orders, with Letters of Marque We preyed on their ships, be it in day or in dark To Spain, we were pirates, to England, we were saints We were all the Queen's men, yet holy priests, we ain't
One day we ran afoul of four huge Spanish Men O' War A reprisal squadron they were, and with their cannons they tore Our hull all in splinters, our mast sails all in shreds With cannon and with grapeshot, one by one we fell dead
We had not a hope, with a squadron of four Our little ship, our proud schooner, a casualty of war Our ship blew apart, with our men in the drink With our stolen gold, to the bottom, our crew did all sink
The Royal Mermaid is now forgotten, except by our kin One of many ships sailed and sunk, and given to sin Proud men had served in the name of the Queen Now in hell, or in heaven, they will wait to be seen
