So long, Abegweit.

So long, Abegweit.

A Poem by Steve Beairsto
"

This poem tells the story about how the ferry that connected Prince Edward Island, Canada, to New Brunswick was replaced by the 13 kilometre long bridge.

"
At night, you could see the ferries ride
Back and forth, to the mainland side
All lit up, the boats did shine
From Borden to Cape Torpentine

On the deck, you took in the salty air
Gentle ocean breeze running through your hair
Stand at the rear, and you'd see the wake
On the port side, all the ripples the boat did make

At day, the water was an azure blue
At dusk, the water was an orangey hue
In winter, there was packed ice all around
At night, the waves were the only sound

Generations of Islanders had worked the boats
Citizens and tourists alike had loved to float
On a miniature cruise, upon the Strait
Even if for two hours, they had to wait

Replaced by the bridge, these boats are now gone
A more convenient road about 13 clicks long
The bridge is a wonder, a sight to behold
A dream many Islanders had always foretold

An old era gone, but a new one had dawned
So much opportunity this bridge has spawned
But I long for the boats, whose memory does span
In the hearts and the minds of this fair Isle of Anne
