Grass Stains

Grass Stains

A Poem by Steph Cruz

Permanently stained
Shorts from a time when
Wearing stained clothing
Was acceptable because you
Didn’t have an image to keep.
After all, you were only a kid.
At the time, you didn’t care
And you couldn’t quite grasp
The definition of judgemental.
You just wanted to have fun,
And you did in those opal
Sky days when you would
Play tag and trip over your own
Feet without the embarrassment.
Then you could just lay there
On a patch of perfect green grass
And make delightful shapes and
Fairy tales out of cotton palaces
In the sky. The green grass stains
They made an impression so
You can always recall the bliss
Life can be.
