This Is MeA Poem by StephanieFor a Self Portrait assignment in my creative writing class.I am not like anyone else, No matter how frequently I am grouped into one category: Teenager, girl, white, Atheist, young adult, middle class. Despite how you label me, I am a life. At my core, I am the east coast. I am a summer thunderstorm and an early spring snow, Hometown delicacies fill my stomach and heart. My hopes and desires, my biggest dreams… They all start here. I am a creature of the night, an owl if you will. The moon is not just an object in the sky, She is the soul of my inspiration. My muse. But muses I have many. I am a curious, wondering mind, Who would love nothing more than to follow Alice Down the rabbit hole. I want to dissolve into enchantment, Ensconce myself in dreams and fantasy. I am a daydreamer, a scenario maker. A list maker…not so much. I am organized chaos, And I want to do everything. I am a heart with much to bear: A friendship, An entire family, A love, All thousands of miles from my own life. I am a daughter. I am a sister. I am a niece. I am a girlfriend. I am a cousin. I am imperfection at it’s greatest. My essence, my being, Is made of every idea, person, event and tragedy That weave in and out of this life I’ve made my own. I am a hidden face at a masquerade, At least to the naked eye. You have only scratched the surface, Need only dig deeper to reveal me.
