This Is Me

This Is Me

A Poem by Stephanie
"

For a Self Portrait assignment in my creative writing class.

"
I am not like anyone else,
No matter how frequently I am grouped into one category:
Teenager, girl, white, Atheist, young adult, middle class.
Despite how you label me,
I am a life.
At my core, I am the east coast.
I am a summer thunderstorm and an early spring snow,
Hometown delicacies fill my stomach and heart.
My hopes and desires, my biggest dreams…
They all start here.
I am a creature of the night, an owl if you will.
The moon is not just an object in the sky,
She is the soul of my inspiration. My muse.
But muses I have many.
I am a curious, wondering mind,
Who would love nothing more than to follow Alice
Down the rabbit hole.
I want to dissolve into enchantment,
Ensconce myself in dreams and fantasy.
I am a daydreamer, a scenario maker.
A list maker…not so much.
I am organized chaos,
And I want to do everything.
I am a heart with much to bear:
A friendship,
An entire family,
A love,
All thousands of miles from my own life.
I am a daughter.
I am a sister.
I am a niece.
I am a girlfriend.
I am a cousin.
I am imperfection at it’s greatest.
My essence, my being,
Is made of every idea, person, event and tragedy
That weave in and out of this life I’ve made my own.
I am a hidden face at a masquerade,
At least to the naked eye.
You have only scratched the surface,
Need only dig deeper to reveal me.

I love this. I like how you were able to describe who you were without saying all the common phrases like nice, kind, funny etc. But you were still able to give the reader a clear idea of who you are. But I have to say my favorite part of the whole things is....
"My essence, my being,
Is made of every idea, person, event and tragedy
That weave in and out of this life I’ve made my own."

Another great piece. Well done!

This was a great poem. It was entertaining and some what imformative. I got a decent idea of who you are as a person. The poem flowed perfectly from line to line as well.

Amazing:

'I am a summer thunderstorm and an early spring snow,'
My favourite...

You take your reader through your poetry feeling like 'wow, what a very thoughful and deep individual' on to end with 'Need only dig deeper to reveal me'

It's like we were marvelling at a master-piece (yourself as an individual as depicted in the poetry) only to realise at the end that what we were marvelling at, was only the tip, the trailer. We haven't even started seeing the real thing...

:)

Wonderful

I will read this a few more times, this is very rich and there are lots of deeper meanings that I am sure I will unearth slowly... :)

That is right... we all have different layers and though ever part of us is like others, the whole package is an unique combination. The biggest part of us lies beneath the surface where few go to understand one another.
