Topsy Turvy

Topsy Turvy

A Poem by Stephanie

Oh Miss Alice

Can I live in your world?

Traipse through golden fields

Of buttercups and daisies

Lose my balance and land among the flowers

Watch the clouds and daydream

Dream of a place far away

Or perhaps far below

A place free of schoolbooks and rules

Where imagination runs free

And overfills the cup of structure

A strange and wonderful place

Can you introduce me to your friends?

The vested rabbit always in a panic :

I’m late, I’m late, I’m late!

Dashing off to unknown places

Perhaps to a long rickety table

All set up for afternoon tea

The neurotic and lovable Mad Hatter

Pouring tea into half a cup

Sitting on a frayed and faded tablecloth

Sunlight poking through the gaps of the trees

Revealing a brilliant cloud of sparkling dust

As the Hatter ask how a raven is like a writing desk

I want to follow you, Alice

Down the hidden rabbit hole

To the eccentric, colorful world of Wonderland

Forget the harshness of reality

Let my bad memories fade away

Sing songs with Tweedle Dee and Dum

I want to wander the enchanted, eerie forest

And be stopped by a floating grin

Cheshire Cat, riddle me anything

Wrap the beauty and madness of this world around me

Take me anywhere as long as it’s here

Tell Alice she never should have left this land

Can I meet the hookah caterpillar?

Listen to his theories and abandon my own?

Paint the roses red, blue, purple and green?

Play the Queen of Hearts and win?

Let me explore this foreign, delicious place

Discover the way it breathes

Alice, Alice

How I wish we could change places

So you could experience the world

For what it’s really like

And I can stay forever

In Wonderland.
