Summer Nights

Summer Nights

A Poem by Stephanie
"

This has been my summer (sortof).

"

Another summer day is spent.

The pools are abandoned,

Midday laughter has long since faded

And the kids have cleared the streets.

Now teenagers take the sunset as their cue

to start their nightly adventures,

make a memory or two.

(I've made a lot of memories this summer.)

They pile into their cars and blast that summer music,

driving aimlessly but with purpose-

to make this night last.

(They never last long enough.)

Tonight I'm not among them.

I'm on the other side of summer nights.

Sitting here in my plaid shorts

I got last summer from Kohl's

and an oversized sweatshirt,

loose hair blowing in the wind from the AC.

Curled up on the couch with a bag of Funyons

watching the newest episode

of Degrassi (again).

And I'll talk this summer night away

(if anyone not partying signs on).

Tomorrow's another day

that will lead to another warm night.

It's been quite the nocturnal summer...

And one I'll never forget.

(Too bad I can't find my camera...)

I like it, sounds real chill. Kinda felt like I was there. I also like the format, you might want to make the font larger for those who's eyes aren't as young as mines.

This has such a feel of freedom, melancholy, and summer music moving through it. The celebration of summer and watching the sun set sooner each night as the days disappear. Hoping it doesn't end. Wonderfully expressive, capturing the moment better than any camera!

Strangely, the formatting is fine - the smaller font in your brackets makes the 'asides' seem 'sotto voce' and I thought they were deliberate!
Summer nights; ah yes. Treasure them now as you enjoy them. We remember them well. They are our treasures, still counted and discussed - summer nights in our youth - warm, balmy and - -mmmmm -shhh. Your poem evokes their atmosphere beautifully - enjoy them, treasure them and remember them, but for now, write about them and keep them. These verses of youthful feeling will remind you of what you were and put into prspective, in the future, what you have become. We sit now in our garden on warm summer nights and remember those of long ago with joy and thanksgiving - I an just writing down my thoughts as your lovely poem has brought them to me. We are 75, still together in our summer night garden and life is wonderful - today I am planting some more beauty around ready for next summer - thank you Stephanie.

haha, that made me smile. I definitely relate with the degrassi thing. I watch the same episodes over and over when they play them like 5 times a day. This is a great poem, nicely written. The flow is a little choppy at parts, but what the hell, we can read it. I love this line: "I'm on the other side of summer nights." Brilliant!!
