When Poetry Revealed Herself To Me

When Poetry Revealed Herself To Me

A Poem by Stephen Cousins
"

A Villanelle about poetry

"

When poetry revealed herself to me

She ran like dizzy children through my head

She took me to the man I am to be

She dressed in clothes that I have never seen

And reminded me of things I’ve never said

When poetry revealed herself to me

I ran and fell, she kissed my bloody knee

She held me in her arms and on she led

And took me to the man I am to be

She spoke in voices sweet with harmony

Then all went quiet, eerie, still and dead

When poetry revealed herself to me

She showed me darkness, fear and destiny

She beat me, kicked and stabbed me and I bled

And took me to the man I am to be

She left me dying face down in the sea

I sank without a trace on to the bed

When poetry revealed herself to me

She took me to the man I am to be
