Zombies of Pleasantwood

Zombies of Pleasantwood

A Story by Stephanie M
"

This is a silly story.

Alice decided that she wanted to become more active in her community. She thought it would be a good idea to

volunteer at the local nursing home. The patient she was assigned to, was a 78 year old woman, named Doreen, who

suffered from emphesema.

A couple weeks later, Alice put on a forest-green blouse, and a pair of black dress pants. She dug through her

jewelry box, until she found a pair of jade earrings. Alice checked the mirror once last time, before heading down the

street, to find the nursing home.

The retirement home was an elegant-looking building, with wooden paneling. There was a row of potted plants,

on both sides of the sliding glass doors. Above the doorway, she noticed a strange metal sign, "Pleasantwood Nursing

Facility" was printed in a soft blue hue.

Alice grinned as she walked into the building. The lobby had a cedar-like aroma to it. She greeted the receptionist,

and signed in the visitor's book.

Doreen was a thin woman, with chrome colored hair. She slept on, and off. When she awoke, she responded by

making clicking noises.

Alice grabbed a book of cat poetry out of her bag, and started to read to her.

Twenty minutes later, she heard an announcement over the loud speaker. "Medication Time!"

A parade of elderly people, with walkers, and canes, marched down the hallway, in single file formation.

As Alice flipped the page of the poetry book, she was rammed by a wheelchair, and something was tugging at her

arm. She turned around, and saw an elderly zombie, with drool running down his face.

Alice decided to continue reading to her patient, after the creature left the room. "The heat must be getting to me," Alice thought to herself, as she took a swig of water.

A few minutes later, elderly zombies were emerging from every room, carrying baby rattles, and singing nursery

rhymes.

Alice quickly apologized to Doreen, and ran out of the building. She called up her volunteer coordinator, and

apologized. "I'm sorry, I'm just not cut out for this. I quit."

That evening, Alice noticed that the nursing home was on the news. Apparently, the outbreak had started from

contaminated medication.
