The Pencil's StoryA Stage Play by SteelyThis is a little play I wrote all about a pencil's long life...Characters - Edward, an old pencil with a long story to tell - Cassie, a little pencil who is very obedient - Gregory, a little pencil who is very enthusiastic Setting An old, stained oak table one night with a lamp dimly lighting the flat surface. The pencils are laying there, looking at the roof, when Edward starts to tell his story to his grandkids. All Enter, Lying Down on Table Edward: Ah, a calm, quiet night Cassie screams. Edward: Or at least it was. Cassie: Grandpa, Greg bit me! Gregory: But she started it! Edward: Kids, it's time to go to sleep. Gregory, biting your sister is bad. Cassie, screaming when someone tries to sleep is also bad. Gregory: Humph! Cassie: Yes, grandpa. Edward: Well, now that we're all awake, why don't I tell you kids a story about my younger days? Gregory: You mean when you said you were dating Jennifer Lopez? Edward looks sternly at Gregory. Gregory: ...sorry. Edward: No, I am telling a story about when I went on a long journey to save your grandma. Cassie sighs. Cassie: How romantic! Gregory: Yuck! Edward: Kids, hush. Now, let me start. Both little pencils sit quietly. Edward: I was a younger pencil, newly ready to go see the world. Your grandma and I were living together on this very table. There was much paper, and we often drew on it. We were not yet married, but I would always write her the most romantic poems. "Erasers are red, #1 pencils are blue, fresh sharpened pencil smells sweet, but not as sweet as you." Edward snorts in disgust. Cassie sighs romanticly. Edward: Kids, quiet down or I'll make you go back to bed. Now where was I? Oh yes, the poems. Well, one day, her and I got in to a little, erm, arguement if you will. She would not speak to me, yet I wanted to apoligize. I wrote my best poem yet and tried to show it to her, yet she would not look at it. So I finally folded it in to a paper airplane, and- Gregory: Paper airplanes are sooo cool! Cassie: Greg! Edward: Hush! Anyways, I tossed it at her. But, lo- Cassie: What's 'lo'? Edward: It's almost like so, just to say but it actually- Cassie: Oh. Edward: Anyways, it hit her square in the side and sent both her and the poem off the table. I was so afraid that she would break, but much worse happened. If she had broken, she would have been out of pain. She fell hard and then the family dog, Rusty- Gregory: What's a dog? Cassie: Be quiet, Greg! Gregory: You be quiet, Cassie! Edward: Both of you be quiet! Edward clears his throat. Edward: As I was saying, she fell, and the family dog Rusty came rushing at the sound. Rusty was a little dog, with short stubby legs, but he was fast. He reached her before me and picked her up in his huge silver fangs and- Gregory: Is there a police chase somewhere in this story? Cassie: Shut up! Edward sighs, annoyed. Edward: -and turned, running towards its lair in the Master's bedroom. I bravely leaped off the table, but broke my lead, and had to limp across the floor towards the lair entrance. It was guarded by- Cassie: A giant butterfly! I love butterflies. Edward shakes his head sadly. Edward: Maybe I should just stop- Gregory and Cassie: NO! Edward: If you two insist, but you must hush! Cassie: We will! Gregory: Definitely! Edward: So I bravely charged, and then a huge wooden plank called the Door stood in my way. I rammed in to it with all my strength and it leaped back a little, snarling and creaking its claws on the side of its body. I realized that it was weak, yet big, so I kept hitting it until finally it growled and ran straight in to the wall with a thud. It growled a little more, but otherwise was limp. Gregory: Cool! Wai- oops. Edward: That's okay, Gregory. Anyways, I ran in to the lair to see your grandmother being pushed around by the large beast. The dog hadn't snapped her or her lead, but she was exhausted, so I ran over to it and stabbed it with what was left of my tip. It snarled in pain, and started to prod me with its feet. I kept poking it, giving your grandmother a chance to escape, before she finally ran in to the dog with her lead. It didn't stab the dog, just hurt it. The beast ran off whimpering. And then, your grandmother and I kissed. Gregory: EW! Cassie: I have to admit... EW! Edward chuckles. Edward: Afterwards, we got back to the table with the Master's help and I was resharpened. That evening, we got married. I still bear a scar from the dog's teeth, though. See? Edward leans in to show a jagged mark on his side. Cassie: Ouch! Gregory: Ick! Edward: But I'm doing fine now. Anyways, we'd better get to bed before your grandmother sees us still up. Grandmother Gloria: I heard that! Edward: Hush, children, let's go to sleep. Good night. Cassie: Goodnight, Grampa! Gregory: G'night, Gramps! Both the kids fall asleep. Edward chuckles and shakes his head. Edward: Those darned kids believe anything. Who would've known that I just fell on the Master's cooking knife once and got a little scratch? Edward sighs, chuckling, and falls asleep. © 2009 SteelyAuthor's Note
