Writing Prompt: The NOC ShiftA Story by A Soap Mess Stories1. It’s 2 a.m. and you’re in the middle of an overnight shift.
It was going to be a long NOC shift!
It was only 2 a.m. and all was quiet. I just thought that! Good thing I didn’t say it out loud! They always said not to say the “q” word in a nursing facility. It didn’t count if you thought it…right?! Guess not! Suddenly, call lights were coming on faster than anyone could answer them. “Get me some water!” one patient asked when I answered the call light. One resident swore she didn’t even push the light…yet the call light was on. I left the resident’s room, only to have it come back on the minute I was out of their room. Another aide told me the light was on. I went in to see what the resident wanted and again, she said she said she never turned it on. But, sure enough, as soon as I walked out…the light was back on! Not wanting to play that game and since I had other call lights on that hadn’t been answered, I left that call light for later and went to answer another call light. This went on for hours…answering call lights and checking on my residents. By the end of the shift, I was tired and just wanted to get out of there and home to my bed. But my supervisor called me into his office before I could leave. He told me I was being put on suspension for neglect of a resident’s call light who claimed I never answered her call light all night! The same resident who said she never turned on her call light when I went to answer it. © 2019 A Soap Mess Stories |
