Who is that tall, lanky English actor with piercing blue
eyes and a hyphen between two of his names? Isn’t that James Henri-Thomas? Why,
yes, it is. I’ve seen him in so many productions on stage and screen that he’s
become a fixture in my memory where I keep all the actors I’ve watched over the
years. He’s the accomplished actor who has that unusual ability to go from
Shakespeare to modern comedy, to playing a fighting soldier in the trenches who
is facing imminent death. He’s one of those rare thespians who can, at a moment’s
notice, transform himself into someone else on a stage or a movie set.
Ah…the acting life. It sounds like a life of fun and
playtime. Of course, if you listen to James talk about it, you soon get the
feeling that the real life of an actor is something a bit different, at least
at the beginning of that road to success. When asked by a veteran interviewer
what inspired him to get into the film industry, James replied that first of
all he wouldn’t recommend getting in to the business to anyone. He added that
you’re generally not going to make a lot of money being an actor and that the
industry can be unfair, tough and very cliquey. Other than that, he loves it.
In fact, he can’t do anything else because he says he has no choice in the
matter; it’s just who he is and it’s who he’s always been. In other words,
acting picked him, not the other way around.
And James does love acting you can tell by his endless
IMDb and other Internet lists of roles he’s performed. The list just goes on
and on and on, which tells the interesting tale of James’ long years of
experience in the business that can be so unfair. He’s been in international
commercials, films and stage productions and he believes his success has simply
come from hard work. (As you can see, besides being quite talented, James is
also modest). He also says that the harder you work, the luckier you get, which
apparently could be seen as an element of James’ success in the movie industry.
We, however, attribute most of his achievements to great talent and his drive
to always be better than he was yesterday.
