Are all the great artists, musicians, dancers, composers and filmmakers from Russia, or is that just another urban legend? Do they have that special ‘something’ in their make up that we don’t know about and have been wishing for all our lives? Could it be the Russian water, perhaps? Maybe we’ll never know and maybe it doesn’t really matter, but what does matter is that there is a brilliant woman from Moscow in our midst who is taking the Hollywood film business by storm.

 

Once Nigina Niyazmatova decided to come to California in 2012 nothing has been the same for us or for her. Her talents, intelligence and drive have been part of many notable and highly praised works, such as, “Chypre,” “Succubus” and “When Negatives Collide” where she was a lead filmmaker. These films, among others that she was involved with, were invited to participate in film festivals. One of Nigina’s short films, “Love. Secured,” was selected to be in the Cannes Film Festival.

 

Perhaps Nigina’s success doesn’t have anything to do with luck at all. Growing up in an atmosphere where the arts are part of a rich culture and heritage, Nigina grew up learning to play the classics on piano and learned to love movies as an art form. Nigina was only nine when American films started to trickle into the country’s capitol and then, she found herself watching more films than she had ever known existed. She immersed herself in American movies, and along with some TV shows from the states, she was able to speak fluent English very quickly.

 

When Nigina moved to Los Angeles to get her Master of Fine Arts Degree in Filmmaking, she learned the craft and art of movie making and began working in the industry almost immediately after graduation.

 

She made several short films, including “Dinner at Audrey’s,” Walk of Light” and “Love. Secured,” which were all very warmly received. She even worked on a project with the famous American actor and brother of Julia Roberts, Eric Roberts. Nigina has worked on numerous short and feature films, commercials and music videos. She is an amazing person who speaks Russian, English and Spanish beautifully, and who has an endless supply of energy for learning, creating and doing things that would leave most of us ready for a long vacation. Nigina is currently developing her own script based on a true story from World War 2. We can’t wait to see it on the silver screen.
