Talented Australian Photographer- 18 Year Old Zen Kai

At just 18 years old, this talented photographer, has the world at his feet

At just 18 years old, Zen Bollard's (Zen Kai's) whole life revolves around photography. From a young age, he always enjoyed drawing and art but it wasn't until he was 14 years old, that he discovered his passion for photography; he bought his own Lumix waterproof camera. Although it was just for fun and hobby purposes, he soon became interested with different angles and the many modes and features of the camera. Unfortunately, it was very limited in its uses, so after a year, he started saving up for a small DSLR so he could practice more advanced techniques. 

Zen took photography courses at school and studied it throughout the ninth, tenth, eleventh grade and is currently studying it, in his senior year. Zen views himself as a very passionate learner and dedicates many hours to teaching himself the art of light. He is really hoping to continue his studies next year at Raffles College of Design and Commerce in Sydney, Australia.

Through his senior years in high school, he has been learning the process of film in the dark room which sparked his interest in the black and white area of photography and he is almost certain that this is the path he wants to take- although sometimes color is a vital aspect of capturing the photograph.

Zen loves all areas of photography from abstract to nature, even commercial architecture interests him, however there are millions of faces in different cultures and lives around the world that fascinate him the most. In saying this, he believes photo journalism is where his aspirations lie. His dream is to one day be shooting for a big magazine like National Geographic that illustrates not only the beauty but also the pain of the world. “A great photograph can explode the totality of our world, such that we never see it quite the same again” quotes Robert Draper in National Geographic’s October 2013 edition. This quote represents how Zen views photography; how he wishes to take his photographs and the impact he wants his photography to have on the world.
