Similar
to some of the greatest performers in the entertainment industry,
Amaka Okafor is a woman who got the majority of her professional
training through association with established performers. Her career
in the performing arts is multifaceted as she comes from a strong
singing background but also has deep passion for acting. Her father,
who she spent a lot of time with, was a very talented musician. Amaka
remembers going on tours with her father as he exposed her to the
good and bad sides of the entertainment industry from when she was a
little girl. When her parents separated, Amaka lost all direction and
sense of purpose in life given that she shared a strong bond with her
father. However her mother was her strong support system who reminded
Amaka of her real passion in life. She was enrolled in the local
youth theatre centre in Birmingham, Midlands Arts Center for some
time as she developed her artistic skills.
Following
her training at the youth theatre centre, she completed formal
university education. Amaka's biggest role models in the business are
Kate Winslet and Eddie Murphy because she believed that these two
actors possess a rebellious and self-assured attitude that compels
any audience to appreciate their craft. Amaka hopes to develop this
unique trait as she believes it will help her ascension up the rungs
of the film industry in America.
In
less than a year ago, Amaka migrated to Los Angeles because she was
convinced that the United Kingdom provided minor opportunities in the
creative arts for people of mixed race. Her mother who is from Indian
descent and her father who is Nigerian have always embedded in her
love for her mixed heritage but nonetheless she faces difficulties
being cast for huge productions because the directors would say that
she does not fit a particular mixed race stereotype. Amaka believes
that in America, she receives a fair chance in developing her acting
career even more.
