An 18 year old girl named Kathleen sneaks out of her house to go to a party one of her friends is have. There she meets a missing piece to finding out about who her mother is

"

“Dad please, it’s just going to be a small party at Tyler’s house.”

“I already told you no twice, now drop it.”

“This isn’t fair, I’m 18 I should be able to make my own choices.”

“Kathleen I’m sick of having this conversation with you. If you want to make your own choices then go live with your mother.”

My eyes filled with tears at that statement. He knew I couldn’t do that. I had never met my mother and that was the one thing I wanted to do more then anything. No one knew where she was, at least that was what I was told.

“Come here sweetie, I didn’t mean that. I’m sorry I just worry about you. I don’t want you to make the same mistake your mother and I did.”

“You mean having me.” I said pulling away.

“No you’re a presses gift from God and I love you the same as your brothers and sister.”

            “You mean half-brothers and half-sister.”

“We’re all part of the same family, why can’t you see that.”

“Because we’re not all part of the same family, your guys’ last name is smith, mine is Patrova.” I said storming off to my room.

My father remarried when I was one and soon had another child with my step-mother. She wasn’t the stereotypical step-mother with an evil heart and hated any child that wasn’t her own. She was just so loud and peppy all the time it made feel sick. I could barely stand to be around her by the time I was 8.

I never knew my mother or anyone on my mother side of the family yet I had her last name. I always thought it was weird but now that I think about it I’m glad I have it. The Patrova name keeps me from having any relation with my step-mother and half-siblings. I always felt like the black sheep of the family and it’s probably because I was. While my half-siblings where off at football and soccer practice, I was locked in my room reading my books and drawing. They all bright colorful t-shirts with Nike and Adidas symbols on them, I wore black skinny jeans and band t-shirts.

“I’m going to Tyler’s party one way or another.” I told myself. “I don’t care what he says, I’m an adult now and I’m free to make my own decisions.”

I throw on my black fallout boy hoodie, crawled out my window and shimmied down my drain pipe as quietly as I could. I got to the ground and took off running in the direction of Tyler’s house. I’ve known Tyler sense we were in kindergarten. I remember the first day we meet I was playing with a doll I had found when he came over and started throwing Legos at me. I dropped the doll and started throwing them back at him. We both started laughing and ended up building a tower together. We’ve been best friends ever sense.

After about five minutes of running a reached Tyler’s house. I could hear the music playing from outside. This defiantly wasn’t a small party. Tyler’s parents were wealthy business men and traveled a lot. This meant leaving him home for long periods at a time with a nanny till he was 16.

I walk inside the house and there are people everywhere. Why did I agree to come to this I hate people. Well, I don’t hate Tyler as long as I find him it won’t be that bad. I weave my way through the mob of people and I still can’t find Tyler. I walk over to a chair I see in the corner and stand up on it to get a better view. I’m only 5’5 so it’s hard to see over everyone’s heads. I scan the crowd and still no luck

“Hey, are you looking for someone?” a voice asked

I turn my head to see someone I have never seen before. Almost everyone here was from my school but this person wasn’t.

“Do you want some help?” he asked me

            “Uum… yeah sure.” I answered

            “Who are you looking for?”

“I’m looking for Tyler.” I told him

“Oh the guy that’s throwing the party. He’s out back, come on I’ll take you to him.”

            “Thanks.”

He took my hand and led me through the mob of dancing people to the back door. I pull my hand away saying “I can make it from here.”

“Well I was heading back outside so I’ll just walk with you.”

We walk in the back and I see a smaller group of people standing around a fire pit with red solo cups in their hands.

“Hey Tyler!” the stranger yelled. “I think that girl you were talking about is here.”

“Kathy you finally made it!” Tyler said with the smell of alcohol on his breath. “Hey guys this is that girl I was telling you about. You know the one I think is really pretty.” He said laughing.

I rolled my eyes and pushed him off me. He always got like this when he was drunk and then never remembering what he said the next day. I look around the small group of people and realize I don’t know any of them.

“Who are all these people?” I whispered to him.

“These are some of my college buddies from running start.” He said loudly. “Hey Kathy come with me I want to show you something.” He said grabbing my hand and pulling me toured the house.

“Hey man where are you two going?” the stranger who helped me asked.

“To do a thing.” Tyler yelled back at him.

We walk into the house and up the stairs into Tyler’s room he shuts the door and sits down on his bed.

“Come sit with me.” He said patting the spot next to him.

“Uum… ok.” this was getting weird. “So what did you want to show me?”

“This.” He stands up drops his shorts and underwear and turns around to reveal his < >. He steps toward me. “I love you Kathy, I always have and I want to show you how much I love you.”

“What are you doing?” I yelled

“Come on just go with it. It’s me the guy who has known you sense like forever.” He said pining me down on the bed.

“Tyler I don’t want to do this.” I said trying to shove hi off me.

“Come on it won’t be that bad.” He said as he began to kiss my neck.

“No! Stop it get off me!” I screamed. What was I supposed to do? Tyler was 6’2 and very strong. There was no way I was going to be able to push him off of me. “Please Tyler stop. I screamed while crying. I could feel him trying to get my pants of but was struggling because he only had one free hand. I was crying and screaming uncontrollably at this time, when suddenly the door to his bedroom flew open.

            “Help me, please!” I screamed

“What the hell are you doing man?” a boy said pulling him off of me and throwing him on the ground.

I was laying there crying and shaking with fear, when the Stanger from earlier came up to me and picked up and carried me out to the front of the house and set me down in the grass.

            “Are you ok?” he asked.

I look up at him with tear filled eyes as my whole body is shacking and shake my head no.

A few seconds later Tyler stumbles out of the house and with a drunken slur says “hey get away from my girl.”

I shuddered at the words as he said them. I was never going to be his girl, especially not after tonight.

“Tyler you need to walk away. Just go back inside and have some fun. I’m going to take Kathy home.”

“No you’re not.” He yelled swinging his fist at the stranger. “She’s going to stay here and have some fun with me.” His fist connected with the bottom of the strangers jaw and sent him to the ground. I started screaming and soon a good crowed of people were standing in the front lawn watching the crazy and drunk Tyler and my mysterious stranger betting each other until some of Tyler’s friends from the backyard came and pulled him off.

I scrambled over to the stranger who was lying in a bloody heap on the ground.

“We have to get you to a hospital.” I said in a panic.

He opened his swollen eyes and said in a weak voice “my keys are in my pocket, can you drive?”

I nodded my head yes and helped him to the car. I could hear Tyler yelling at his friends to let go of him so he could finish him off. I walked as fast as I could while helping the stranger to the car. I put him in the passenger seat and sped off down the road to the nearest hospital. When we arrived I helped him to the front desk and explained everything that happened. At least what happened to him.

I sat in the lobby of the emergency room for 2 hours till a nurse dressed in scrubs came up to me.

“You can go in now if you like.” She told me.

I stood up and walked in the back to a small room. I opened the door and saw him lying in the bed his face beaten and bruised along with his knuckles. I walked over to his bedside and sat in the chair next to the small hospital bed. “Why would some who doesn’t even know who I am risk something like that to save me?” I thought to myself.

His eyes fluttered open and he looked over at me.

“Are you ok?” he asked me

“Am I ok, you should be worried about yourself instead.” I told him

“I need you to tell me something.”

            “What is it?”

            “What is your name?”

            “Kathleen Patrova”

“Well at least getting beat up wasn’t for nothing.”

            “What do you mean?”

“This might be hard for you to hear…”

            “Just tell me.” I demanded

“My name is Justin Patrova, I’m your brother.”

I fell back in my chair my eyes widening. “This isn’t happening.” I told myself. I only have half-siblings; I don’t have any really siblings. “What do you mean my brother?”

“Well your twin brother to be exact.”

“How is this even possible?” I asked

“Well when mom and dad slit he got you and mom got me.”

“So you know my… I mean our mom?”

“no.” he said with a sigh. “I live with my… our grandparents.”

“This is too weird.” I said “I need to go home.”

“No, please stay. I want to get to know you.”

“Why would you want to do that?”

“You’re my sister and I’ve never had any siblings before. It would be nice to get to know the one I have.”

I sat down in the chair by the bed. “how about we do this tomorrow. You can come over to my house and we can talk. You look like you need to rest and I really need to get home.” I stood up and started to make my way toured the door.

“Sis, please don’t leave me here alone.” I stopped and turned around. “Hospitals kind of scare me.”

I had never had someone to call me sis before. I liked how it sounded. Maybe I should give him a chance and see if he really is my brother. “Your 18 that’s kind of childish, don’t you think?”

“Not when your biggest fear is needles.”

We both sat there laughing and talked for a good part of the night.

The next morning Justin was discharged from the hospital. I helped him to the car and headed for my house. I arrived at the house at about 10:30. I get pout of the car and start to walk toward the front door with Justin close behind me. I open the door and am greeted by the angry father of my father.

“Young lady, where the hell have you been? You have some serious explaining to do!” he yelled

“I think you have more to explain then I do.” I said gesturing to Justin.

“Do talk to me that way, you are in serious trouble, and how the heck is this.”

“Dad this is Justin, my brother.”

My father’s eye grew wide. “What did you just say?”

            “Dad it’s me, Justin.”

My father’s eyes filled with tears as he pulled Justin in for a hug. “What are you doing here?” he asked.

“Grandma and grandpa told me about you and Kathleen and I had to find out if it was true.”

            “How did you find her?”

            “Last night at Tyler’s party.”

“That’s where you ran off to! Don’t think you’re getting out of this, your still in trouble.”

Clearly even after almost getting rapped by my best friend sense 2nd grade and meeting my twin brother I never knew I had the universe still things I need to be punished. Haven’t I already gone through enough yet?

“Don’t go too hard on her, I still need her help with something.”

“And what would that be?” dad asked.

“I want to try and find mom. I know it’s a long shot but with your help maybe we can do it. What do you think?”

“I think it’s a stupid idea.” Dad said “if your mother wanted to be in your guys’ life she would have never left.”

“But we have the right to meet her at least once don’t we?” Justin asked. “I mean come on we’re 18 we have the right to do whatever we want.”

“Doesn’t anyone care what I think?”

“Well, what do you think about it then.” Dad asked

I didn’t know what to say I couldn’t just up and leave I have a job and school but I did want to meet my mom. “Why can’t you look for her on your own?” I asked

“I was planning to then grandma told me that I had a twin sister and I thought you would want to meet her too.”

“Your right Justin, you two should at least meet your mother once in your lives but I don’t want you guys to be driving around the country looking for her. I’ll go make some calls and see if I can find out some information for you two before you go.”

It’s been two days and my father hasn’t been able to find anything about my mother. He managed to track down one of my aunts on my mom’s said but she said she didn’t know anything.

“What are we going to do if he can’t find anything?” I asked Justin

“I don’t know.” He said with a sigh. “Well if he can’t find anything I could always ask grandma.”

            “Then call her.” I demanded

“There’s just one problem. Grandma doesn’t have a phone.”

“Then how are we going to get a hold of her?” I asked panicking

“We would have to go to her house.” He said. “It’s not like it would be a big deal if we did, I mean I live with her for 18 years.”

“True, but we have to leave at some point and I don’t think dad wants us too.”

            “Why would you say that?”

“Well he has both of us together under the same roof and I think he wants it to stay like that for as long as possible.”

“That could be true but we have the right to now are mother and find her. So maybe we should tell him were going to start looking.”

Just then my father walked around the corner with a smile on his face. “You kids want to go get some lunch?”

“Sure, where do you want to go?” Justin asked.

“How about the dinner down street, they got some great burgers.”

            “Sounds good.”

“Great, I’ll drive.” My dad said heading for the front door.

Justin started to follow and I grabbed his arm. “What are you doing? Aren’t we going to tell him we’re leaving?”

“Yes, but we can still get a meal out of it while we’re still here.” He said

We drove to the dinner down the street and ordered are food when we got there. We sat in silence for a few minutes until dad said something. “It’s great having the both of you together these past couple days. I remember how heartbroken I was when your mother left with you, Justin. But now you’re both together again and it feels like we’re almost a family again.”

“Dad, you have a family. Remember you wife and three other kids?”

“I know, but you two were my first and I haven’t seen you two together sense you were about 3 months old.”

“Look dad we have something we need to tell you.” I said “We want to start looking for mom.”

His smile faded into a frown. “Oh I see.”

“Please don’t be upset. We won’t be gone forever, we’ll come back.”

“And maybe we’ll find her and bring her back with us.” Justin added

“I respect your dissection to want to find her, but please do not under any circumstances bring her back with you.”

“But why? Don’t you want to see her?”

“No, I do not.” He said coldly.

We sat in silence and ate are food after that and drove home. When we arrived back at the house I ran upstairs to my room to pack a bag with my clothes, phone charger, books and some other essentials. As I walked down the stairs I could see dad and Justin hugging. This must be really hard for him to see his son he hasn’t seen in 18 years and his oldest daughter leave to find the mother that left them so many years ago.

“Are you ready to go?” I asked

“Yes.” He said wiping a tear away from his eyes.

“Take care of her son.” Dad said.

            “Don’t worry I will.”

“Bye dad, we’ll be back soon and I’ll call you when we get to grandma’s house.” I said hugging him

“Remember to keep your cellphone charged and don’t hesitate to call if you need anything.”

            “I won’t.” I said pulling away.

“Here take this.” He handed me a small envelope. “It’s some money so you two don’t get hungry.”

            “Thanks dad.”
